Turkish Medical Association (TMA)

The Turkish Medical Association (“TMA”) is an independent medical and health professional association, and 80% of the physicians in Turkey are members of TMA. The aims of TMA are to protect and to promote public health in Turkey, to contribute to medical education, and to protect the morals of the profession of medicine and the rights of physicians. Within this framework, TMA regularly produces ideas in regard to the determinants of public health including peace, socioeconomic environment and democracy.

Human rights defenders (HRDs) in Turkey have been subjected to judicial harassment, including criminal prosecution, violent attacks, threats, surveillance, prolonged arbitrary detention, and ill-treatment. In the aftermath of an attempted coup in July 2016, the environment for the work of HRDs deteriorated even further.
