Marem

“Marem” is a volunteer initiative group founded in summer of 2020 by women human rights defender Svetlana Anokhina. The project bears the name of Marem Alieva, who was suffering from physical and psychological abuse from her husband and disappeared in 2015. The Marem project aims to help women from Dagestan and other North Caucasus republics who face the threat of domestic violence or death. Marem helps victims to arrange evacuations, find temporary accommodation, pay for transport, and provides legal and psychological support to victims.

Russia

HRDs are often subjected to acts of harassment, surveillance, physical attacks, threat, raids and searches on their offices and homes, slander and smear campaigns, judicial harassment, arbitrary detention, and ill-treatment, as well as violations of the rights to freedom of expression, association, and assembly. There have also been cases where HRDs have been murdered as a result of their work.
