Jane Julia Camp - Fazenda Santa Lúcia

On May 24, 2017, 10 rural workers were killed at the Fazenda Santa Lúcia, Pará, including the camp leader, Jane Julia. The Pau d'Arco Massacre, as it became known, counted with the involvement of 17 members of the civilian and military police. Up until now, only the material perpetrators have faced criminal accusations - and none of them is imprisoned. The intellectual perpetrators have not yet been identified. In addition to the slow judicial procedures, one of the areas of the massacre – which is now occupied by 200 families, including victims and survivors – remains in dispute over its possession.

Brazil

The challenges and threats faced by human rights defenders in Brazil remain very high, particularly for those working on issues of land, environment, indigenous peoples, LGBTi rights, corruption and impunity.
