Human rights defender Adam H. forced into exile
On 27 September 2022, Somali human rights defender and journalist Adam H. fled Somalia after years of persecution and harassment by people who claimed to be linked to an extremist group operating in Somalia and Kenya. His investigative work exposing the group's recruitment of child soldiers and broader human rights abuses led to sustained threats, violent retaliation, and his eventual exile.
Adam H. is an award-winning human rights journalist, human rights defender, and researcher specialising in indigenous and environmental rights, as well as the protection of marginalised groups such as women and children. His work focuses on advocating for justice, transparency, and equality in Somalia. Through his investigative work, Adam H. exposed the clandestine recruitment of child soldiers by Al-Shabaab, documenting the abduction of minors from their villages and other countries, their indoctrination, and their forced involvement in the group's violent activities. His reports attracted international attention but also provoked severe retaliation from extremist leaders, including a senior figure in Al-Shabaab's operations.

His reports attracted international attention but also provoked severe retaliation from extremist leaders, including a senior figure in Al-Shabaab's operations.
In July 2009, Adam H. was abducted by militias in an incident that exemplifies the severity of the retaliation he faced. The human rights defender subsequently escaped through the intervention of state forces, but not before enduring days of torture, including beatings, starvation, and psychological abuse, intended to silence his advocacy. However, his release did not mark the end of his persecution. The human rights defender had been conducting research on the secret recruitment of Somali child soldiers and had refused to renounce his findings. Consequently, people who claimed to be linked to Al-Shabaab escalated their campaign by targeting his family. In November 2013, Adam’s sister and young nieces were abducted in an attempt to pressure him into submission. The girls were subjected to profound psychological and physical abuse before their mother managed to orchestrate an escape.
Notwithstanding his escape and subsequent exile, Adam H. continues to be subjected to digital harassment and threats. The reach of Al-Shabaab has extended beyond Somalia, and the human rights defender is under constant surveillance and intimidation.
Front Line Defenders strongly condemns the persecution and torture of Adam H. Front Line Defenders believes these reprisals are part of a broader campaign to silence voices advocating for justice and accountability in Somalia.
Front Line Defenders urges the authorities in Somalia to:
- Ensure the immediate protection of human rights defender Adam H. and his family members;
- Guarantee that in all circumstances all human rights defenders and journalists in Somalia can carry out their legitimate human rights activities without fear of reprisals and free from all restrictions;
- Take all necessary measures to ensure that those responsible for crimes committed against human rights defenders are held accountable and brought to justice.
