On 21 January 2012, Messrs Lehbous Ould Omar, Ely Ould Ravaa, Ell Mehdy Ould Lemrabott and Abdallahy Abou Diop, human rights defenders and members of l'Initiative de résurgence du mouvement abolitionniste en Mauritanie (IRA), were released from detention in Aioun.

On 6 January 2012, at 10am, human rights defender Mr Hasna Al Wali was arrested in the city of Dakhla by uniformed and plain clothes officers from the Moroccan Judiciary Police.

On 28 March 2011, human rights defender Ms Miriam Miranda Chamorro was detained for ten and a half hours by authorities in the municipality of Tela, Honduras. Miriam Miranda Chamorro is the President of the Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña – OFRANEH an organisation which has worked since 1978 for the promotion of the Afro-Carribean Garífuna community's capacity for self-determination through programmes which support their political, social, economic and cultural advancement. She was a participant in the 2005 Dublin Platform for human rights defenders.

Palestine: Detention and ill-treatment of human rights defender Mr Mohanad Salahatposted on: 2010/04/12

Human rights defender Mr Mohanad Salahat was detained and ill-treated from 28 March 2010 until 11 April 2010 by Palestinian intelligence officers in Ariha city (Jericho). Mohanad Salahat is a representative of the Palestinian Human Rights Foundation (Monitor) in Jordan. Monitor is a Palestinian human rights organisation with its headquarters in Lebanon.

Uzbekistan - Human rights defender, Mr Farhad Muhtarov, sentenced to five years in prison on fraud chargesposted on: 2009/10/12

On 2 October 2009, in Tashkent, human rights defender, Mr Farhad Muhtarov, was sentenced to five years in prison on fraud charges. He had pleaded not guilty to charges of fraudulently borrowing sums of money. Farhad Muhtarov is an activist with the grassroots movement Human Rights Alliance of Uzbekistan, which works on a variety of human rights issues including torture, access to justice, right to a fair trial, economic and social rights, and the rights of vulnerable groups.

Sudan: Ongoing arbitrary detention and ill-treatment of human rights defender, Ms Nahla Bashir Adamposted on: 2009/02/24

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defender, Ms Nahla Bashir Adam, was arbitrarily arrested and detained on 15 December 2008. Nahla Bashir Adam is Deputy Director of the Youth for Children Association (YCA), a non-governmental non-profit organisation which was founded in 2003. The YCA works in South Kurdufan to promote the rights of children and awareness on issues such as education and health regarding children, especially those with disabilities and chronic diseases in Sudan.

Uzbekistan – Ill-treatment of detained human rights defender Norboy Kholjigitovposted on: 2008/10/17

Update Front Line is seriously concerned by new reports of the deterioration in the health of human rights defender Norboy Kholjigitov, former President of the Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan (HRSU), Ishtikhan district. On 18 October 2005, the Samarkand Regional Criminal Court sentenced Norboy Kholjigitov to ten years' imprisonment and he is currently being detained at the 64/49 Prison in Karshi.

Yemen: Human rights defender and journalist Abdul-Karim al-Khaiwani subjected to ill-treatment and denied medical treatmentposted on: 2008/08/21

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defender and journalist Abdul-Karim al-Khaiwani has been subjected to ill-treatment while in prison. Abdul-Karim al-Khaiwani is former Editor-in-Chief of the pro-democracy online publication Al-Shoura. He is a pro-democracy activist and a campaigner for the right to freedom of expression in Yemen, and was recently awarded the 2008 Amnesty International UK Special Award for Human Rights Journalism Under Threat. On 9 June 2008, Abdul Al-Khaiwani was sentenced to six years' imprisonment after being convicted by a state security court in Sana'a of conspiracy with anti-government rebels; on the basis of allegations which are believed to be fabricated.

Iran: Arbitrary Detention and Ill-Treatment of human rights defenders Hemid Valai, Sejjad Radmehr and Vedud Esediposted on: 2008/08/08

Front Line is concerned following reports that human rights defenders Hemid Valai, Sejjad Radmehr and Vedud Esedi have been arbitrarily detained and subjected to ill-treatment and torture. Hemid Valai is a human rights lawyer. Hemid Valai, Sejjad Radmehr and Vedud Esedi are all activists working to promote the rights of ethnic Azerbaijanis in Iran.

Tunisia: Ill-treatment of human rights defender Slim Boukhdir while in detentionposted on: 2008/05/29

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the ill-treatment of human rights defender Slim Boukhdir while in detention. Slim Boukhdir was arrested on 26 November 2007 and on 18 January 2008 he was sentenced to one year's imprisonment. He is currently detained in Sfax prison, 230 kilometres south of Tunis. Slim Boukhdir is a correspondent with the London-based pan-Arab newspaper Al Quds Al Arabi and the website of the satellite news channel Al-Arabiya. He also writes for other news websites, including Tunisnews and Kantara.
