Israel / OPT: Detention of human rights defender Mr Mohammad Othman extendedposted on: 2009/10/13

In a scheduled hearing on 8 October 2009, detained Palestinian human rights defender Mr Mohammad Othman has had his detention period extended for an additional 12 days by a military court. This followed a hearing on 29 September, when a military court in Kishon extended Mohammad Othman's detention period for 10 days to allow for further interrogation. Mohammad Othman, who works with the “Stop the Wall” grassroots campaign, had been arrested on 22 September while returning to Ramallah in the West Bank from Jordan. He had traveled to Norway where he took part in an advocacy tour and fulfilled a number of speaking events.

Today [3 March], 10 human rights organisations in Israel wrote to the Defense Minister and the Commander of Military Forces in the West Bank, sharply protesting against the denial of freedom of movement of Shawan Jabarin, Executive Director of the Palestinian human rights organisation al-Haq. Since Jabarin was appointed, in 2006, Israel has not allowed him to leave the West Bank. The organisations called for the prohibition on Jabarin’s exiting the West Bank be lifted. Otherwise, he will be prevented from obtaining a prestigious award for al-Haq’s work in advancing human rights.

The Al-Mezan Centre for Human Rights and Al-Haq have recently published a report which documents attacks on human rights defenders and civil society organisations in the context of the struggle for power between Fateh and Hamas in which abuses have been committed by both sides.
