Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the arbitrary detention of human rights defender and human rights lawyer Bijaya Chanda on 5 March 2008. Bijaya Chanda is a practicing lawyer at Alipore District Sessions and Criminal Court in West Bengal where she defends victims of human rights violations. She is also a member of the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), and also closely attached to Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha (MASUM), both of are human rights organisations based in West Bengal.  Read More

Julfikar Ali is the Murshidabad District Human Rights Monitor of the National Project on Preventing Torture in India (NPPTI) which is coordinated by People's Watch and sponsored by the European Union. Arumugam Katuraja Kanagaraj is the District Human Rights Monitor in the Salem district, Tamil Nadu, of the National Project on Preventing Torture in India which is coordinated by People's Watch and sponsored by the European Union. Front Line expresses concern regarding the continued detention of human rights defender Lachit Bordoloi, who was arrested on 11 February 2008. Lachit Bordoloi is a journalist and adviser of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), an organisation working to defend civil and human rights in the Assam region. He is also the convenor of the Peoples Committee for Peace Initiatives in Assam (PCPIA) and a member of the Peoples Consultative Group (PCG), an organisation set up to initiate peace discussions between the Indian Government and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).  Read More

India:Harassment of human rights defender Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi and colleagues

Front Line expresses concern regarding the charges that have been filed against human rights defender Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi and other staff members of the People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR). Dr Raghuvanshi is the Convener of the PVCHR and also a member of the District Vigilance Committee on Bonded Labour in the State of Uttar Pradesh, in northern India. In his work in the defence of human rights, Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi has focused on the protection of the right to food and on victims of death due to starvation.  Read More

India: Concern at allegations by Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry of NGOs hyping of child labour issues

Front Line would like to express its concern following reports of the remarks made by the Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry regarding the role of NGOs in India in the fight against child labour. Minister Kamal Nath stated on 30 October 2007 that recent newspaper reports regarding the employment of children in sweatshops in the garment industry were exaggerated and implied that the allegations were motivated by a desire to impede economic progress in India.  Read More
