On 16 December 2009 human rights defender Ms Umida Ahmedova, a photographer and film-maker, learnt that she is facing charges of slander and insult in relation to a book of her photographs. The charges relate to an investigation opened in November 2009 by the Uzbek Agency of Media and Information into several books and films created on gender issues, whose authors were examined by officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Read More

Zimbabwe: NANGO members Mrs Dadirai Chikwengo and Mr Cephas Zinhumwe released, charges pending

Human rights defenders Mrs Dadirai Chikwengo and Mr Cephas Zinhumwe, arrested on 25 October 2009 after the NGO Directors' Summer School held on 23-24 October in Victoria Falls, were released on bail on 27 October 2009. Charges against them, however, are still pending. Dadirai Chikwengo is the Chairwoman of the Board of National Association of Non Governmental Organisations (NANGO) and Cephas Zinhumwe is its Chief Executive Officer. Read More

Lina Solano is a founding member of the Popular Peasants Association, a member of the executive committee of the National Co-ordinating Committee for the Defence of Life and Sovereignty (NCCDLS), a member of the Women Defenders of Mother Earth (WDME), and a founding member of the Women’s Latin American Union, a regional network of women defenders of environmental rights. Read More

Uganda: Charges brought against three LGBT rights defenders, Pepe Julian Onziema, Valentine Kalende and Usaam Mukwaaya

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that charges of trespassing have been brought against Pepe Julian Onziema, Valentine Kalende and Usaam Mukwaaya, defenders of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in Kampala, Uganda. Pepe Julian Onziema, Valentine Kalende and Usaam Mukwaaya work for Sexual Minorities in Uganda (SMUG), an organisation dedicated to the defence of LGBT rights. The charges were brought against them following their arrests on 4 June 2008 during a peaceful protest at the HIV/AIDS Implementers' Meeting, an annual event described as an opportunity for HIV programme implementers to share lessons learned and best practices in an effort to strengthen the efficacy of HIV/AIDS programmes. The event is co-sponsored by the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), UNAIDS, the World Bank, the Global Fund, UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+). Read More

Yemen: Charges and travel ban against human rights defender and journalist Abdul-Karim al-Khaiwani

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defender and journalist Abdul-Karim al-Khaiwani is facing charges of having terrorism ties and that his trial due to take place on 21 May has been postponed. Abdul-Karim al-Khaiwani is former Editor-in-Chief of the pro-democracy online newspaper Al-Shoura, and a campaigner for the right to freedom of expression in Yemen. He has been nominated for the 2008 Amnesty International UK's special award for human rights journalist under threat but might not be able to attend the Award Ceremony on 8 July 2008 due to a travel ban imposed upon him by the Yemeni authorities. Read More

Take Action to protect two prominent human rights defenders in Ethiopia

Front Line is deeply concerned over the detention and upcoming trial of two human rights defenders, Netsanet Demissie and Daniel Bekele. They have been detained since 2005 and are due in court on 12 July 2007. The charges against them carry a possible life sentence or death penalty.
