Vietnam: Trial of seven human rights defenders currently being held incommunicado to take place on 30 May 2011posted on: 2011/05/27

Seven human rights defenders are to face trial on 30 May 2011 at the People's Court of Ben Tre, in Vietnam, on charges of coercion. They are land rights activists and religious freedom advocates who oppose the confiscation of land by the authorities, Pastor Duong Kim Khai, Ms Tran Thi Thuy, Mr Nguyen Thanh Tam, Mr Pham Van Thong, Mr Nguyen Chi Thanh, Ms Pham Ngoc Hoa and Mr Cao Van Tinh. Pastor Duong Kim Khai, Tran Thi Thuy and Nguyen Thanh Tam are members of Viet Tan, an organisation which advocates for a democratic Vietnam through peaceful activities. All seven have been held incommunicado since their arrests last summer.

Bahrain: arrest of human rights defender and leading blogger Ali Abdulemam and ten other human rights defendersposted on: 2010/09/06

Human rights defender and leading Bahraini blogger, Mr Ali Abdulemam was arrested on 4 September at 9 pm by the Bahraini National Security Agency (NSA). Ali Abdulemam created and managed since 1999 a leading news website on Bahrain (www.bahrainonline.org) as well as a blog. He has been active internationally raising attention to the situation of freedom of expression and the media environment in Bahrain.

Mr Robert Ilunga Numbi, president of Les Amis de Nelson Mandela (ANMDH), has been released on bail today 1 October 2009 from the Malaka central prison, after a month in detention. Robert Ilunga was arrested on 31 August 2009 by agents of the national intelligence agency (ANR) in Kinshasa and held incommunicado for nine days.

Human rights defender, Mr Salah Yahya el-Saqladi, has been held incommunicado in an unconfirmed location since his arrest on 18 June 2009. Salah el-Saqladi is a journalist and the head of the Aden branch of the Organization for Change and the Defense of Rights and Freedoms (OCDRF).
