Human rights defender Azimjan Askarov has had his life sentence confirmed after trial and appeal hearings, attended in part by Front Line, and which were marred by procedural irregularities and threats of violence. Front Line has also received reports that Azimjan Askarov has been systematically beaten and is currently in urgent need of medical attention.

A Syrian Supreme court sentenced seven human rights defenders to between five and seven years' imprisonment on 17 June 2007 for allegedly taking part in a pro-democracy discussion group and publishing articles on the internet which criticized the lack of democracy and freedom in Syria.
