Geneva: Human rights defenders write open letter to the United Nations Human Rights Council

35 human rights organisations have published an open letter to the United Nations Human Rights Council, which was signed onto by human rights organisations from throughout the world. Special Representative publishes details on countries respect for human rights defenders

24 May 2006 The Special Representative of the Secretary General for human rights defenders, Ms. Hina Jilani, has published her 2006 report to the Commission on Human Rights, now the Human Rights Council. The report includes an addendum (Add.5) which details her communications with individual countries with respect to human rights defenders at risk. The addendum also includes an analysis of trends and developments over the six years of her mandate. The report contains a compilation of the developments to the situation of human rights defenders and the implementation of the Declaration in 118 countries over the past six years. Each country assessment is divided into four sections: the human rights defenders community; legal framework; measures taken at national level for the implementation of the Declaration, and; communications and concerns.
