Iran: Update – Human rights defender Shiva Nazarahari sentenced to six years in prison and 76 lashesposted on: 2010/09/21

On 18 September 2010, human rights defender Ms Shiva Nazarahari was sentenced to six years in prison, to exile in Izzeh - a city in Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran - and to 76 lashes. Shiva Nazarahari later had her sentence of 76 lashes commuted to a fine of approximately £250.

The Gambia: Human rights defender Mr Edwin Nebolisa Nwakaeme sentenced to six months detention with hard labourposted on: 2010/09/08

On 6 September 2010, a Gambian court sentenced human rights defender, Mr Edwin Nebolisa Nwakaeme to six months mandatory jail term with hard labour. The court also fined him D10,000 (approximately $330 USD) in lieu of an additional three years of detention with hard labour.

Front Line expresses its concern regarding the sentencing of three human rights defenders; Mr Ibrahim Beriaz, Mr Ali Salim Ablagh and Mr Saeed Al-Wa’ban. On 20 July 2010 the Court of Appeal in Marrakesh (sentenced the three defendants to two years in prison and a fine of 1000 Dirhams (approximately €90) each.

Yemen: UPDATE – Human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer sentenced to 8 years in prison posted on: 2010/01/25

On 17 January 2009, the penal court which serves as a State Security Court sentenced human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer to 8 years in prison. Yasre Al-Wazeer is a member of the Yemeni Organsiation for the Defence of Rights and Democratic Freedoms (YODRFD).

The European Parliament passed a resolution on 24 May 2007 expressing deep concern at the restrictions imposed and the charges made against human rights defender, Anwar al-Bunni for exercising his democratic right to engage in peaceful activities and called on the Syrian Government to respect freedom of opinion and the right to a fair trial.
