Front Line is concerned following reports that human rights lawyer, Ms Filiz Kalayci, was arrested on 27 May 2009. Filiz Kalayci has been working on human rights violations in prisons and on the improvement of prison conditions. She is a member of the executive committee of the Human Rights Association (IHD).

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the delay in proceedings in the case of human rights defender and lawyer, Mr P. Uthayakumar. He continues to be deprived of his required prescription medication for diabetes and is suffering from a number of diabetes related illnesses. Mr P. Uthayakumar is a human rights lawyer working to defend the rights of the ethnic minority Indians and an active Legal Advisor of Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF). He was arrested on 13 December 2007 for organising a peaceful demonstration.

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that documents carried by human rights lawyer Dzimbabwe Chimbga were confiscated by security agents at Harare International Airport on 2 May 2008. Dzimbabwe Chimbga works with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), a non-governmental organisation committed to upholding respect for the rule of law and the unimpeded administration of justice, free and fair elections, the free flow of information and the protection of constitutional rights and freedoms in Zimbabwe.

Sentencing of human rights defender Anwar al-Bunni

The European Parliament passed a resolution on 24 May 2007 expressing deep concern at the restrictions imposed and the charges made against human rights defender, Anwar al-Bunni for exercising his democratic right to engage in peaceful activities and called on the Syrian Government to respect freedom of opinion and the right to a fair trial.
