On 2 February 2012, judge Gonçalves da Silva Filho from the Rodonian Tribunal (2ª Vara do Tribunal do Júri de Rondônia) decided to close the case against Osias Vicente, accused of killing human rights defender Adelino “Dinho” Ramos on 27 May 2011.

Russian Federation: Failure to investigate attack on human rights lawyer Ms Sapiyat Magomedova posted on: 2011/02/23

The period of investigation into the physical assault by police of human rights defender Ms Sapiyat Magomedova in June 2010 has reportedly been prolonged until March 2011. Sapiyat Magomedova is a lawyer at Omarov and Partners, a law firm known for its strident defence of human rights.

Omarov and Partners frequently take on cases relating to abductions, torture and extrajudicial executions in Dagestan. Sapiyat Magomedova has sent four applications to the European Court of Human Rights about violations of her clients' rights by detectives from the prosecutor's office in Khasavyurt, Dagestan.

Some eight months after the physical assault of Sapiyat Magomedova, the investigation remains at an apparent standstill, and those responsible have yet to be brought to justice. Furthermore, the investigation in the assault case subsequently taken against Sapiyat Magomedova also remains open.

On 17 June 2010, Sapiyat Magomedova was attacked and severely beaten by police officers at Khasavyurt police station as she attempted to meet a client.

Mexico - Death threats against human rights defender Mr Adolfo Guzmán Ordazposted on: 2009/12/23

On 14 December 2009, human rights defender Mr Adolfo Guzmán Ordaz received a death threat at his home in Comitán de Comínguez, Chiapas. The threat came two days before he was due to testify at a hearing in order to identify a police officer who took part in a raid of his home. Adolfo Guzmán Ordaz is a member of the organisation “Connect, Communication and Training” (Enlace, Comunicación y Capacitación – Enlace CC). Enlace CC is a civil organisation with bases in Chiapas which works for sustainable development for indigenous people and rural workers in central and southern Mexico, incorporating human rights and gender equality as its guiding principles.

Sri Lanka: Political investigation into supporters of threatened human rights defender, Dr Paikiasothy Saravanamuttuposted on: 2009/09/23

One hundred and thirty-three supporters of human rights defender, Dr Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, have come under investigation by the Sri Lankan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) after they signed a petition that was published in several newspapers on 27 August 2009.
