Niger - UPDATE - Ongoing harassment of human rights defender, Mr Marou Amadou by security forces posted on: 2009/09/23

On 16 September 2009, at approximately 10.30 pm, members of the national police came to the home of Marou Amadou seeking to re-arrest him. A number of human rights defenders had gathered outside of the home and demanded to see an arrest warrent. The police could not produce a warrent but waited in a threatening manner outside of the house until the early hours of the morning of 17 September.

Human rights defender Mr Marou Amadou has been detained by the Forces Nationales d'Intervention et de Sécurité – FNIS (National Intervention and Security Forces ) on 11 August 2009 after being discharged by Niamey's Tribunal de grande instance – TGI (Court of first instance). New charges have been brought against him and he is currently being held in the Koutoukalé high security prison, 48 km from Niamey.
