Israel: Update - Legal proceedings against human rights defender Mr Ameer Makhoulposted on: 2010/06/23

Further to the Front Line Appeal sent on 26 May 2010, Front Line has received the following new information with regard to the detention of human rights defender Mr Ameer Makhoul in Israel: On 13 June 2010, a preliminary hearing was held in the case of Ameer Makhoul at Haifa District Court, following the submission of an indictment on 27 May 2010 against Ameer Makhoul before said Court by Israeli State Prosecutors, charging him with assistance to the enemy in a time of war, conspiracy to assist an enemy, aggravated espionage, and contact with a foreign agent.

Kyrgyzstan: Legal proceedings against human rights defender Ms Baktygul Imankogoevaposted on: 2010/01/05

On 15 December 2009, a hearing of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan in relation to charges against human rights defender Ms Baktygul Imankogoeva took place in her absence, which was the result of her recent hospitalisation. Baktygul Imankogoeva is a doctor and ecologist who became involved in the defence of the human rights of the inhabitants of the village of Barksoon, after a truck with cyanide belonging to the Kumtor mining company overturned on 20 May 1998.

Front Line is concerned following reports regarding the legal proceedings brought against human rights defender Mr Leanid Svetsik. Leanid Svetsik is a member of the Vitsebsk branch of the human rights centre Viasna and one of the founders of the civil human rights organisation Nasha Viasna. Leanid Svetsik is providing legal aid for victims of human rights violations and he contributed to the preparation of numerous complaints accepted by the UN Human Rights Committee.
