India: Update - Central Bureau of Investigation offers reward for information into murder of human rights defender Ms Shehla Masoodposted on: 2012/02/10

Front Line Defenders is informed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has offered a cash reward of 1,000,000 Indian Rupees (€15,270) for anyone who could provide information on the murder of human rights defender and right to information activist Ms Shehla Masood.

On 2 February 2012, judge Gonçalves da Silva Filho from the Rodonian Tribunal (2ª Vara do Tribunal do Júri de Rondônia) decided to close the case against Osias Vicente, accused of killing human rights defender Adelino “Dinho” Ramos on 27 May 2011.

On 8 December 2011, human rights defender Mr Zarteef Afridi was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Ghundai area near Jamrod Bazaar, Khyber Agency.

Philippines: Murder of human rights defender Father Fausto Tentorioposted on: 2011/10/21

On 17 October 2011, human rights defender Father Fausto Tentorio was murdered at the Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Arakan, North Cotabato. Father Fausto Tentorio was an Italian priest associated with the Pontifical Mission for Foreign Missions. Father Fausto Tentorio had been advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples and peasants in the region for many years.

DRC: Verdicts in trial of killers of murdered human rights defender Floribert Chebeyaposted on: 2011/06/24

On 23 June a military court in DRC announced the verdict in the trial of the alleged killers of human rights defender and founder of Voix Des Sans Voix, Floribert Chebeya Bahizire. Four of the accused were sentenced to death, one was sentenced to life imprisonment and three were acquitted.

While Front Line welcomes the conviction of those involved in the killing of Floribert Chebeya Bahizire, the organisation urges the DRC Minister for Justice to commute the death sentences to life imprisonment.

One of those sentenced to death is Colonel Daniel Mukalay who was Chief of Police Intelligence at the time of the killing of Floribert Chebeya Bahizire and his driver Fidèle Bazana and whom the judge identified as the intellectual author of the crime. At the time of his killing Floribert Chebeya Bahizire was on his way to a meeting with Police General John Numbi who remains suspended from his post "pending investigation".

02 June 2011 marks the first anniversary of the killing of the Democratic Republic of Congo's most prominent human rights defender Floribert Chebeya Bahizire, Director of Voix des sans Voix (Voice of the Voiceless) and his driver Fidèle Bazana Edadi, also a member of VSV. Both men disappeared on 1 June 2010 after going to the police headquarters, upon police request, to meet General John Numbi Banza Tambo. Mr Chebeya Bahizire's body was found in his car on the outskirts of Kinshasa on 2 June 2010. The body of Mr Bazana Edadi has never been found.

The daughter of human rights defender Mr Pedro Brizuela , Ms Claudia Larissa Brizuela , was murdered on 24 February 2010. Pedro Brizuela is a member of the Frente Nacional de Resistencia Popular - FNRP (National Popular Resistance Front). Claudia Larissa Brizuela was also a FNRP supporter.

Human rights defender and journalist, Mr Bruno Koko Chirambiza was murdered on 23 August 2009 in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Bruno Chirambiza was a radio presenter for the privately owned station, Radio Star. He had reported on political instability and violations of human rights in the DRC. He is the third journalist to be killed in Sud-Kivu in recent years.

Ernest Manirumva was the vice-president of Observatoire de lutte contre la corruption et les malversations économiques, OLUCOME (the Observatory for the Fight Against Corruption and Economic Embezzlement), a watchdog non-governmental organisation.
