China: Human rights defender Mr Zhu Yufu sentenced to seven years imprisonmentposted on: 2012/02/10

On 10 February 2012 Hangzhou City Intermediate People's Court sentenced human rights defender Mr Zhu Yufu to seven years in prison and a further three years deprivation of political rights for 'inciting subversion of state power'.

Iran: UPDATE- Human rights defender Jila Baniyaghoub sentenced to one year in prison and a 30 year ban from journalism posted on: 2010/10/29

On 25 October human rights defender Jila Baniyaghoub failed in her attempt to overturn a one year prison sentence and a 30 year ban from journalism handed down in June 2010.

Palestine: UPDATE- Human rights defender Abdallah Abu Rahma sentenced to one year in prison for organising a peaceful demonstrationposted on: 2010/10/29

Human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma has been sentenced to a year's imprisonment by an Israeli Military Court, for organising non-violent demonstrations against the Israeli-built barrier at the West Bank village of Bi'lin. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, a six-month suspended sentence if he re-offends and a fine of 5,000 NIS (£870).

Syria: Human rights defender Mr Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman sentenced to one year in prisonposted on: 2010/10/06

On Wednesday 29 September 2010 human rights defender, Mr Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman, was sentenced to one year in prison. Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Human Rights Organisation in Syria (MAF), an organisation which represents the Kurdish minority in Syria.

On 17 May 2010, human rights defender Ms Shadi Sadr was sentenced to six years of imprisonment and 74 lashes. Shadi Sadr is a prominent human rights lawyer and women's rights defender, and co-founder of Zanan-e Iran (Women of Iran), a women's rights organisation.

"It is up to the Kazakh authorities to urgently find a just conclusion to the case of the human rights defender Yevgeny Zhovtis" said the OSCE's Matteo Mecacci in a report issued today after last week’s visit with Mr. Zhovtis. Mr. Zhovtis is serving a four year sentence at a penal colony in Ust-Kamenogorsk following a fatal traffic accident last year.

Morocco: UPDATE human rights defender Chekib El-Khiari receives three-year prison sentence and 753,930 Dirham fineposted on: 2009/06/30

According to the official news agency MAP, on 24 June 2009,the Casablanca criminal court of first instance sentenced Mr Chekib El-Khiari to three years in prison and ordered him to pay 753,930 Dirhams to Moroccan customs. The court said that Khayari deposited money in foreign banks without the authorization of Morocco's Exchange Office.

Oman: Human rights defender, Mr Ali al-Zwaidi, sentenced to 10 days in prisonposted on: 2009/04/24

Front Line is concerned following reports that human rights defender, Mr Ali al-Zwaidi, has been fined 200 Omani Rial and sentenced to 10 days in prison on 21 April 2009. Ali al-Zwaidi is a supervisor of an on-line discussion forum called “Sablat Oman”. He is a co-founder and a board member of the Oman Writers' Society and has been a writer in the Oman press since 1986.

Somaliland: Sentencing of human rights defender, Mr Mohamed Abdi Guled “Urad”posted on: 2009/03/23

Front Line is concerned following reports that Mr Mohamed Abdi Guled “Urad” was sentenced to five months' imprisonment on 17 March 2009. Mohamed Abdi Guled “Urad” is a member of the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) and the editor of newspaper YOOL.

Iran: Sentencing of human rights defender, Mr Faleh Abdullah Al-Mansouriposted on: 2009/02/27

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defender Mr Faleh Abdullah Al-Mansouri has been sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment. Faleh Abdullah Al-Mansouri is head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Ahwaz and is also a human rights defender. He is originally from Iran but fled to the Netherlands as a refugee in 1998 and has since become a Dutch national. In the Netherlands he was an active member of human rights organisation Amnesty International.
