On 4 April 2013, a jury in Marabá, in the state of Pará, Brazil, sentenced Lindonjonson Silva Rocha and Alberto Lopes do Nascimento to prison terms of 42 to 45 years respectively for the May 2011 murders of human rights defenders Maria do Espírito Santo and José Claudio da Silva.
On 5 February 2013, human rights defender Abdiasis Abdinur Ibrahim, also known as Koronto, was sentenced to one year in prison following his attempt to investigate the case of a woman who claimed to have been raped by state security forces.
On 16 August 2012, prominent human rights defender Mr Nabeel Rajab was sentenced to three years imprisonment on charges of illegal assembly by the Bahraini Lower Criminal Court.
On 10 February 2012 Hangzhou City Intermediate People's Court sentenced human rights defender Mr Zhu Yufu to seven years in prison and a further three years deprivation of political rights for 'inciting subversion of state power'.
On 25 October human rights defender Jila Baniyaghoub failed in her attempt to overturn a one year prison sentence and a 30 year ban from journalism handed down in June 2010.
Human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma has been sentenced to a year's imprisonment by an Israeli Military Court, for organising non-violent demonstrations against the Israeli-built barrier at the West Bank village of Bi'lin. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, a six-month suspended sentence if he re-offends and a fine of 5,000 NIS (£870).
On Wednesday 29 September 2010 human rights defender, Mr Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman, was sentenced to one year in prison. Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Human Rights Organisation in Syria (MAF), an organisation which represents the Kurdish minority in Syria.
On 17 May 2010, human rights defender Ms Shadi Sadr was sentenced to six years of imprisonment and 74 lashes. Shadi Sadr is a prominent human rights lawyer and women's rights defender, and co-founder of Zanan-e Iran (Women of Iran), a women's rights organisation.
"It is up to the Kazakh authorities to urgently find a just conclusion to the case of the human rights defender Yevgeny Zhovtis" said the OSCE's Matteo Mecacci in a report issued today after last week’s visit with Mr. Zhovtis. Mr. Zhovtis is serving a four year sentence at a penal colony in Ust-Kamenogorsk following a fatal traffic accident last year.
According to the official news agency MAP, on 24 June 2009,the Casablanca criminal court of first instance sentenced Mr Chekib El-Khiari to three years in prison and ordered him to pay 753,930 Dirhams to Moroccan customs. The court said that Khayari deposited money in foreign banks without the authorization of Morocco's Exchange Office.
