On 4 April 2013, a jury in Marabá, in the state of Pará, Brazil, sentenced Lindonjonson Silva Rocha and Alberto Lopes do Nascimento to prison terms of 42 to 45 years respectively for the May 2011 murders of human rights defenders Maria do Espírito Santo and José Claudio da Silva.

Human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma has been sentenced to a year's imprisonment by an Israeli Military Court, for organising non-violent demonstrations against the Israeli-built barrier at the West Bank village of Bi'lin. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, a six-month suspended sentence if he re-offends and a fine of 5,000 NIS (£870).

According to the official news agency MAP, on 24 June 2009,the Casablanca criminal court of first instance sentenced Mr Chekib El-Khiari to three years in prison and ordered him to pay 753,930 Dirhams to Moroccan customs. The court said that Khayari deposited money in foreign banks without the authorization of Morocco's Exchange Office.
