Vietnam: Update – Front Line Defenders informed of the locations of detained human rights defenders posted on: 2011/10/10

On 29 September 2011, Front Line Defenders was informed through local contacts of the locations of eight human rights defenders who were arrested by police officers and officials of the Ministry of Public Security between 30 July and 16 August 2011. Initially, they had been held incommunicado at an unknown location.

Egypt: Numerous human rights defenders detained, whereabouts unknownposted on: 2011/02/04

On 3 February 2011, numerous human rights defenders were arrested and detained by members of the military police and unknown individuals in Cairo. The location of their detention remains unknown. Those arrested include members of the Hisham Mubarak Centre for Law(HMCL), the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), the Front to Defend Egyptian Protesters and the *Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies(CIHRS), among others.

It is reported that on the afternoon of 3 February 2011, the offices of the HMCL were raided by members of the military police and up to 30 individuals arrested. A large number of lawyers and members of NGOs were gathered on the premises at the time.

Among those arrested were members of the HMCL and ECESR, including their respective directors, Messrs Ahmed Seif Al-Islam Hamad and Khaled Ali, along with staff members of Amnesty International and a delegate from Human Rights Watch. In the evening of 3 February 2011, Mr Amr Sallah, a researcher for CIHRS, was arrested by unidentified officials.

Iran: UPDATE- Fear for the well-being of detained human rights lawyer Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh posted on: 2010/10/19

Front line is deeply concerned for the well-being of human rights lawyer Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh who has been on a hunger strike since 25 September 2010. Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested on 4 September 2010 and is currently being detained at Evin Prison. According to information received from inside the prison, detainees on ward 209 have reported hearing Nasrin Sotoudeh's agonizing screams almost every night throughout the ward.

Russia: Relatives of human rights lawyer Ilyas Timishev detained, questioned and ill-treatedposted on: 2008/07/21

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that three family members of human rights defender, Ilyas Timishev, have been detained, questioned and ill-treated in Chechnya since 15 July 2008. Ilyas Timishev is a human rights lawyer who has brought a number of cases before the European Court for Human Rights and is currently working to defend the rights of members of the Chechen police force who have not been paid.
