Yemen – UPDATE – Human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer charged with forming an armed groupposted on: 2009/11/10

On 1 November 2009, detained human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer was brought before a penal court in Yemen which serves as a State Security Court, and in a closed hearing was charged with forming an armed group. No lawyer was present, as Yasre Al-Wazeer was not informed about the hearing beforehand. He has reportedly never been interrogated in relation to charges of forming an armed group.

Zimbabwe: ZESN members arrested and charged for holding public outreach workshopposted on: 2009/10/30

Human rights defenders, Mr Thulani Ndhlovu and Mr Ndodana Ndhlovu, were arrested on 28 October 2009 in Dete, Hwange for conducting a public outreach workshop, allegedly without police clearance. Ndodhana Ndhlovu was released later that day while Thulani Ndhlovu remained in custody until this morning, when he was released on bail.

On 12 October 2009, human rights defenders Ms Illian Deta Arta Sari and Mr Emerson Yuntho, two staff members for the NGO Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), received a summons from the police to report for questioning as suspects in a criminal defamation case. Illian Deta Arta Sari is Deputy Coordinator for ICW, and Emerson Yuntho is ICW's Law and Justice Monitoring Division Coordinator.

Russia: Charges brought against museum director for defending freedom of expressionposted on: 2008/05/14

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that charges of extremism have been brought against Yury Samodurov, director of the Sakharov Centre in Moscow. The Sakharov Centre is an art museum which is also used for human rights events such as press conferences and seminars, and has extensive literature on human rights in its library.
