Palestine: Travel ban on human rights defender Mr Shawan Jabarin continuesposted on: 2011/12/01

On 28 November 2011, leading Palestinian human rights defender Shawan Jabarin was prevented by the Israeli authorities from crossing the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge on the Jordan-West Bank border to travel to Denmark to accept a prize from the Danish PL Foundation in recognition of his human rights work.

Uzbekistan: Travel ban imposed on human rights defender Mr Dmitry Tikhonovposted on: 2011/06/10

On 23 May 2011, Mr Dmitry Tikhonov was refused permission to board a plane going from Tashkent to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Dmitry Tikhonov is a member of the Human Rights Alliance of Uzbekistan and actively monitors the human rights situation in the town of Angren in the Tashkent region. The Human Rights Alliance works on several human rights issues including torture, access to justice, right to a fair trial and economic and social rights. It is particularly active in organising street actions and advocating the right to peaceful assemblies.

Tunisia – Travel ban against human rights defender Mr Ali Ben Salemposted on: 2010/12/02

On 26 November 2010, human rights defender Mr Ali Ben Salem, aged 78 years, was prevented from leaving on a flight from Tunis-Carthage airport to Barcelona, where he was due to take part in a number of events related to his human rights work.

Further Information

Ali Ben Salem is a founding member of several human rights organisations in Tunisia, including the National Council for Liberties in Tunisia(CNLT) and the Association of Former Members of the Resistance (ANAR). He is also president of the Bizerte branch of the Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH).

On 26 November 2010, Ali Ben Salem arrived at Tunis-Carthage airport to take a flight to Barcelona, Spain. Around 8:00am, the border police prevented him from leaving the country on the pretext of legal proceedings against him, in particular libel proceedings instituted against Ali Ben Salem in June 2006, following a press release he published on behalf of the LTDH on the treatment of political prisoners in Tunisia.

Since the case was opened in 2006, it has remained at the stage of preparation for eventual judgement.

Bahrain: Update - Human rights defender Mr Abdul-Redha Mohammed permitted to leave Bahrainposted on: 2010/07/05

Further to the Urgent Appeal issued on 16 June 2010, Front Line has received the following information concerning the de facto travel ban in place against human rights defender Mr Abdul-Redha Mohammed: Abdul-Redha Mohammed was permitted to leave Bahrain the week beginning 28 June 2010.

On 2 March 2010, human rights defender Mr Mohammed Saleh El-Bejadi, 32, from Barida/Qaseem, was prevented from leaving Saudi Arabia en route to Qatar. Mohammed Saleh El-Bejadi is a supervisor of the website “Monitor of Human Rights in Saudi Arabia-Al-Marsad”, a co-founder of the Saudi Civil & Political Rights Association (ACPRA) established in October 2009, and was previously the host of a weekly on-line forum called “The Citizen and His Rights”, which was reportedly considered provocative by the Saudi authorities.

Syria: Travel ban imposed on human rights lawyer Mr Radef Moustafaposted on: 2010/02/25

Human rights defender Mr Radef Moustafa was prevented from travelling to Geneva to attend the Fourth International Conference against Capital Punishment taking place from 24-26 February 2010. The security authorities did not give any reason for preventing Radef Moustafa from travelling outside Syria.

Human rights defender Mr Radef Moustafa was prevented from travelling to Cairo to attend a Front Line regional workshop on the implementation of the EU guidelines on human rights defenders, which took place on 2-3 December 2009. The Security intelligence and the State intelligence offices in Aleppo refused to grant Radef Moustafa the permission to travel.

Saudi Arabia: Travel ban against blogger Mr Raif Badawi for criticising religious policeposted on: 2009/12/08

On 6 December 2009, blogger and human rights defender, Mr Ra’if Badawi, was stopped at Jeddah airport and prevented from travelling to Beirut. No official explanation was given for the travel ban or its time limit; however, it is believed that it is related to charges brought against Ra’if Badawi in relation to a website he set up, in which he has criticized the religious police for violations of human rights.
