Human rights defender Mr Radef Moustafa was prevented from travelling to Cairo to attend a Front Line regional workshop on the implementation of the EU guidelines on human rights defenders, which took place on 2-3 December 2009. The Security intelligence and the State intelligence offices in Aleppo refused to grant Radef Moustafa the permission to travel. Read More

Saudi Arabia: Travel ban against blogger Mr Raif Badawi for criticising religious police

On 6 December 2009, blogger and human rights defender, Mr Ra’if Badawi, was stopped at Jeddah airport and prevented from travelling to Beirut. No official explanation was given for the travel ban or its time limit; however, it is believed that it is related to charges brought against Ra’if Badawi in relation to a website he set up, in which he has criticized the religious police for violations of human rights. Read More

Iran- UPDATE- Iranian human rights defender Mr Emad Baghi prevented from receiving major human rights award in Geneva

Front Line has been concerned to learn that Iranian human rights defender, Mr Emad Baghi, has been prevented from leaving Iran to travel to Geneva, Switzerland, where he was due to receive the prestigious Martin Ennals Award (MEA) on 2 November. Emad Baghi was prevented from getting his passport without any explanation on the part of the authorities. He has become the first laureate in the 18-year history of the MEA not be allowed to receive his prize in person. Emad Baghi founded the Society for the Defense of Prisoners' Rights, and has been a vigorous and outspoken opponent of the death penalty in Iran. Read More

Saudi Arabia: Continued travel ban and harassment against human rights defender, Mr Mohammed Saleh El-Bejadi

On 23 July 2009, human rights defender, Mr Mohammed Saleh El-Bejadi was informed by the passport authorities in Barida, Saudi Arabia, that he continues to be banned from travelling. Mohammed Saleh El-Bejadi is a supervisor of the website “Monitor of Human Rights in Saudi Arabia-Al-Marsad” and was previously the host of a weekly on-line forum called “The citizen and his rights”, which was reportedly considered provocative by the authorities. Read More

Syria: Travel bans on human rights defenders Abdul-Raheem Gomaza, Rassem Sulaiman El-Atasi and Zuhair Shams-el-Den Al-Sageer

Front Line is concerned following reports that travel bans have been imposed on human rights defenders, Mr Abdul-Raheem Gomaza, Mr Rassem Sulaiman El-Atasi and Mr Zuhair Shams-el-Den Al-Sageer. Abdul-Raheem Gomaza is the former secretary and current chief attorney of the National Organisation for Human Rights. He has published articles on capital punishment in Syria and in November 2007 he monitored a trial in Egypt on behalf of the Arab Commission for Human Rights. Rassem Sulaiman El-Atasi is the director of the Syrian section of the Arab Organisation for Human Rights and Zuhair Shams-el-Den Al-Sageer is a board member of the same organisation. Read More

Tunisia: Travel ban against human rights lawyer, Mr Mohamed Abbou

Front Line is concerned following reports that human rights lawyer Mr Mohamed Abbou was again prevented from leaving Tunisia on 3 March 2009. He is a member of the Conseil National pour les Libertés en Tunisie – CNLT (National Council for Liberties in Tunisia). Front Line has issued several urgent appeals concerning Mohamed Abbou, most recently on 17 December 2008 following a previous incident in which he was prevented from travelling. Read More
