Human rights defender Ms Tatiana Dovlatova and her family face intimidation, harassment, threats and continuous surveillance by law enforcement authorities following a television broadcast in which she spoke out against the human rights situation in the country.

The Gambia: Continuing judicial harassment of Isatou Touray and Amie Bojang-Sissohoposted on: 2011/11/02

Human rights defenders Dr Isatou Touray and Amie Bojang-Sissoho will appear in court on 3 November 2011. Over a year after the opening of the trial and with no substantive evidence from the prosecution having been presented, the authorities continue to adjourn and unduly prolong the trial.

Vietnam: Judicial harassment, police surveillance, and intimidation of human rights defender Mr Huynh Van Dongposted on: 2011/08/02

In a letter received by human rights defender Mr Huynh Van Dong on 22 July 2011, the Daklak Bar Association accuses him of violating the Vietnamese Lawyers' Code of Conduct because he provided legal representation to clients persecuted for being critical of the government.

Further Information

Huynh Van Dong is a human rights lawyer and a member of the Daklak Bar Association. He has been a practicing lawyer since 2003 and works primarily on cases concerning the protection of land rights and the right to freedom of expression.

On 22 July 2011, Huynh Van Dong received a letter from the Daklak Bar Association requesting that he present himself before the Association on 31 July 2011 in order to discuss his work, in particular for his representation of clients who are critical of the Government. The letter claims that through his work as a lawyer, Huynh Van Dong has violated the code of conduct applicable to lawyers, as well as damaged the interests of the Vietnamese Government.

Huynh Van Dong was informally told by an official at the Daklak Bar Association that the Association wanted to terminate his membership and advised him to find another job.

Kazakhstan: Ongoing judicial harassment against detained human rights defender Ms Natalya Sokolovaposted on: 2011/07/14

Since 24 May 2011, human rights defender and trade unionist Ms Natalya Sokolova has been held in detention. On 31 May 2011, a criminal investigation was launched against her for “inciting social hatred”, under Article 164 (3) of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan. Natalya Sokolova is the legal representative for a trade union formed by employees of the Karazhanbasmunbay oil company.

China: Sentencing of human rights defender Mr Liu Xianbin to 10 years imprisonmentposted on: 2011/03/28

On 25 March 2011, human rights defender Mr Liu Xianbin was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment by the Suining Intermediate People's Court in Sichuan Province. Liu Xianbin is a veteran democracy and human rights activist who was a founding member of the Sichuan branch of the China Democracy Party (CDP) in 1998, and has previously served two terms in prison for his activism. He has been in detention since his arrest on 28 June 2010 (see Front Line Urgent Appeal dated 7 July 2010).

Cambodia: Judicial harassment of human rights defender Mr Sam Chankeaposted on: 2011/01/20

On 25 January 2011, the final verdict will be given in the case of human rights defender Mr Sam Chankea at the Kg. Chhnang Provincial Court in Cambodia. Sam Chankea, who is Coordinator of the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) in Kampong Chhnang, and particularly active in issues related to land rights, is charged with defaming the work of a private company.

On 18 January 2011, Sam Chankea appeared before Kg Chhnang Provincial Court on charges of defamation against the work of the KDC International Company, which is owned by the wife of the Cambodian Minister for Mining and Energy. It is reported that during the hearing, the judge stated that he would give his final verdict in the case on 25 January 2011.

The charges against Sam Chankea reportedly relate to a radio interview, broadcast on 26 December 2010, in which Sam Chankea alleged that the aforementioned company had violated the law by refusing to suspend certain activities despite the fact that a court case in relation thereto was ongoing and awaiting judgement.

Nigeria: Stigmatisation, arrest and judicial harassment of childrens rights defenders in Akwa Ibom Stateposted on: 2011/01/19

Human rights defenders involved in the protection of abused and abandoned children accused of witchcraft in Akwa Ibom State, including Mr Leo Igwe of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), Mr Sam Ikpe-Itauma of the Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN) and Mr Gary Foxcroft of Stepping Stones Nigeria (SSN), are being subjected to an intensifying campaign of stigmatisation and judicial harassment by authorities and private individuals in Akwa Ibom State.

Leo Igwe is the West Africa representative of the IHEU and executive secretary of the Nigerian Humanist Movement; he has been the subject of previous Front Line Urgent Appeals dated 2 March 2010 and 16 August 2010.

Harassment and stigmatisation of organisations and individuals involved in the protection of children accused of witchcraft in Akwa Ibom State has intensified particularly since the airing of a series of television programmes concerning the same issue, aired on CNN in August 2010.

Belarus: Widespread searches and judicial harassment of human rights defenders following Presidential Electionsposted on: 2011/01/12

Numerous individual human rights defenders and organisations have been subjected to police and judicial harassment, ill-treatment, searches and raids carried out at their offices and homes, since the unrest which followed the Presidential Elections of 19 December 2010.

Further Information

Most of the searches have been carried out in relation to a criminal investigation opened by the Minsk Department of Interior under Article 293 parts 1 and 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (participation and organisation of mass disorder) which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. This investigation aims at establishing the involvement of human rights defenders in the political unrest.

On 19 December 2010, Mr Aleh Gulak, Chair of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC), who was observing the opposition rally, was arrested despite explaining the reasons for his presence. He was brought to a temporary detention facility where was forced to spend three hours standing with his face to a wall. On 20 December at midday, he was brought to court where he was accused of participation in an unauthorised rally.
