Russian Federation – Burning of the office of human rights organisation, Mothers of Dagestanposted on: 2009/08/20

The office of the human rights organisation, Mothers of Dagestan for Human Rights (MDHR), burned down on the night of 19 August 2009, resulting in the destruction of all office equipment. The chairperson of MDHR, Ms. Svetlana Isaeva, has told Front Line that she believes that the office was “intentionally set on fire.”

Dagestan: Farid Babaev, Dagestani political candidate and human rights defender assassinatedposted on: 2007/12/05

Farid Babaev political candidate and human rights defender was assassinated in Makhachkala in Dagestan on 21 November 2007. Farid Babaev had worked to highlight many cases of human rights abuses including, abductions, forced disappearances, the fabrication of criminal cases and unprecedented corruption. Four gunmen opened fire on him in the lobby of his apartment building in a killing reminiscent of the killing of Ana Politkovskaya.
