Front Line is gravely concerned following reports of the killing of Magomed Yevloyev, human rights defender, journalist and owner of the Internet news site www.ingushetiya.ru, on 31 August 2008 in Nazran. Front Line is deeply concerned following information received of the killing of human rights defender Wabiwa Kabisuba on 18 May 2008, in her home in Panzi, seven kilometres from the town of Bukavu, in the province of Sud-Kivu. Wabiwa Kabisuba was a coordinator with the human rights organisation Voix des sans voix ni liberté (VOVOLIB) (Voice of the voiceless and powerless) and also worked as a councillor at VOVOLIB´s centre for victims of sexual violence in Panzi.  Read More

Philippines: Killing of human rights defender Celso Pojas

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defender Celso Pojas was shot dead on 15 May 2008 outside the offices of the Farmers Association in Davao City (FADC). Celso Pojas was Secretary General of the FADC. He had spoken out against militarisation in indigenous communities and worked to defend the land rights of farmers and indigenous people in the Philippines.  Read More

Guatemala: Killing of Felipe Álvarez and fears for the safety of Juan Francisco Almira and Manuel Antonio Aguilar

Front Line is gravely concerned following the killing, on 8 December 2007, of community leader Felipe Álvarez of the Community Council for Development (Consejo Comunitario de Desarrollo, COCODES) of the community of Microparcelamiento El Naranjo, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, in the department of Escuintla in southern Guatemala. Following the death of Felipe Álvarez, there are very serious concerns regarding the safety of the remaining two members of the COCODES, Juan Francisco Almira and Manuel Antonio Aguilar.  Read More

Brazil: Killing of human rights defender Valmir Mota de Oliveira, Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra

Front Line is deeply concerned following the killing of the human rights defender Valmir Mota de Oliveira and the wounding of six people including human rights defenders Gentil Couto Viera, Jonas Gomes de Queiroz, Domingos Barretos, Izabel Nascimento de Souza, and Hudson Cardin, following an attack by armed militia on agricultural farmers on 21 October 2007. Valmir Mota de Oliveira was a member of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra - MST (Landless Workers' Movement) and a member of Via Campesina, the international peasant movement. MST and Vía Campesina seek agrarian reform and are two of the largest social movements in Latin America.  Read More
