Human rights defender Mr Parvez Aslam Choudhry received new death threats as a result of his human rights activities. Parvez Aslam Choudhry is the Chairperson of Legal Aid for the Destitute and Settlement (LADS) in Lahore, a non-governmental organisation which provides legal aid to marginalised people who are either falsely implicated by the police or unable to afford legal assistance themselves.

LADS provides legal support to poor detainees and works against discriminatory laws in Pakistan.

Parvez Aslam Choudhry is Chairman of Legal Aid for the Destitute and Settlement (LADS) in Lahore. In 2003 he was awarded the Bishop John Joseph Award by Pakistan Minorities Front for his outstanding work in defending the rights of minorities at considerable personal risk.

Front Line is gravely concerned by the information received concerning the arbitrary arrest of 55 human rights defenders, the house arrest of Ms Asma Jahangir, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, as well as the impending arrest warrant that has been issued against Ms Hina Jilani, Vice Chairperson of the HRCP and United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General on the situation of human rights defenders.

"The situation in the country is uncertain. There is a strong crackdown on the press and lawyers. A majority of the judges of the Supreme Court and four judges of the High Court have not taken their oaths. The Chief Justice is under house arrest (unofficially). The president of the Supreme Court Bar, Aitzaz Ahsan, and two former presidents, Mr Muneer Malik and Tariq Mahmood have been imprisoned for one month under the preventive detention laws" says human rights defender Asma Jahangir in Lahore.
