On 9 March 2013, police severely beat a number of human rights defenders and members of Initiative pour la Résurgence du Mouvement Abolitionniste en Mauritanie – IRA (Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement) in the town of Kaédi in Southern Mauritania.
Human rights defenders in Mauritania denounced the attempt by intelligence and security officials to create dissent within anti-slavery NGO IRA-Mauritania and set up a rival organisation with the aim to discredit it.
