Cuba: Update- Human Rights Defender Mr Antonio González Rodiles Releasedposted on: 2012/11/27

On 26 November 2012, around 4pm, human rights defender Mr Antonio González Rodiles was released after 19 days in Acosta police station in Havana. In order to obtain his freedom he had to pay a fine of 800 Cuban pesos (approx. 23 EUR). Antonio had been detained during a wave of arrests and beatings of human rights defenders on 7 November 2012.

At its centre are the more than 100,000 displaced Saharawi living in refugee camps throughout Algeria such as the one visited by Bardem in 2008 that inspired this project.

On 29 August 2012, the Nasimi District Court of Baku denied human rights defender Mr Hilal Mamedov's appeal against a previous court decision rejecting his complaint of ill-treatment in detention.

On 3 September 2012, human rights defender Mr Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid and six of his colleagues were released on bail. All seven individuals are members of the Initiative pour la Résurgence du Mouvement Abolitionniste en Mauritanie – IRA (Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement in Mauritania), an organisation working for the eradication of slavery in Mauritania.

Day 3 in Guatemala - the shanty town Vs. the sand quarry

Yesterday we went to Peronia, one of the new shanty towns that have sprung up around Guatemala City to accomodate the more than 1 million people who travel into the city everyday to work. Slums where a family can pay 30 Euro for one room with limited water and sanitation. The community here in Peronia have been badly affected by a sand quarry which has essentially removed one of the local mountains.

In 2008 Yuri (Melini) received a call from a local priest, Fr. Elias stating that the community were under pressure because of their resistence to the quarry. Children were getting sick because of the constant dust, sore throat complaints were on the rise, the food was always covered in dust and the lorries were up and down the street all the time. In addition, the woods, where people had been able to send their children to play and which were a resource for the whole community, were simply being eliminated.

Yuri helped them with legal and communications advice and moral support.
