“Front Line strongly welcomes the new resolution passed by the European Parliament plenary session today (Thursday), which pays tribute to the invaluable work of human rights defenders and sets out a range of new and renewed recommendations, including on issuing emergency visas and providing shelter in Europe, as additional forms of protection provided by the EU,” said Mary Lawlor, Executive Director of Front Line, in Dublin today.

Human rights defender Ms Irom Chanu Sharmila was re-arrested on 10 March 2010 and charged with attempting to commit suicide. Irom Chanu Sharmila had just been released from the security ward of Jawaharlal Nehru (JN) Hospital two days previously, 8 March 2010.

On 13 December 2007, Front Line together with the Anti-discrimination Centre “Memorial” held the seminar “Challenges to legitimacy – Strategies for Strengthening the Space for Human Rights Defenders in Russia”. This event brought together 35 participants: human rights defenders from different parts of Russia, representatives from international human rights NGOs and IGOs, including UN, EU and OSCE - ODIHR. The seminar came out with concrete recommendations for both Russian civil society and the international community.
