Further Information

In January 2008 during the post election violence Njeri Kabeberi’s name was published on a list of human rights defenders who should be targeted because it was stated that in calling for an end to the violence they had betrayed their ethnic origins. As a result she had to leave her home and live in a different house every week as her strategy for survival, while maintaining her public work as normal. To-date and although these threats were public, the policehas not taken any action, meaning the threat hangs over the heads of Njeri and all those others threatened at the time. Many human rights defenders in Kenya have their calls and e-mails monitored as a matter of course. In the event of even a minor public demonstration such as handing in a petition to government they risk baton charges tear gas and arrest. If taken into custody human rights defenders face the risk of torture and ill treatment. The standard response of the police to any public action is to respond with maximum violence. Human rights defenders are routinely denied their right to freedom of assembly and association.
