Dublin: 110 human rights defenders from 85 countries join Front Line for Dublin Platform

More than a hundred Human Rights Defenders from around the world attended the formal opening of Front Line's “5th Dublin Platform for Human Rights Defenders” Dublin Castle from 10- 12 February. The Dublin Platform is one of the biggest international gatherings of human rights defenders and brings together human rights defenders from every region of the world. “Despite their radically different backgrounds and issues the one thing they all have in common is that they are at risk for their legitimate work in defense of the human rights of others” said Mary Lawlor Director of Front Line.

Yemen: UPDATE – Human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer sentenced to 8 years in prison

On 17 January 2009, the penal court which serves as a State Security Court sentenced human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer to 8 years in prison. Yasre Al-Wazeer is a member of the Yemeni Organsiation for the Defence of Rights and Democratic Freedoms (YODRFD). Read More

Joint Statement by the Asian Human Rights Commission and Front Line: India- Human rights defender and freelance journalist, Mr. Jiten Yumnam, released from custody

Front Line and the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) are pleased to inform you of the release of Mr. Jiten Yumnam and seven other persons from custody in Manipur state, India. Dublin: Defending Hope in Gaza - a photographic exhibition documenting the impact of Operation Cast Lead opens in Filmbase

Palestinian human rights defender Khalil Shaheen launches “Defending Hope in Gaza” a new photographic exhibition by Front Line documenting the courage of human rights defenders under siege. The exhibition shows how the people of Gaza are bravely struggling to survive, while the work of human rights defenders is restricted by limitations on freedom of movement. Defending Hope in Gaza will run in Filmbase from 11-24 January. Admission is free - Open 9.30am - 5.30pm Monday-Friday, 11:30am- 5:30pm on Saturdays and 11:30am-3pm on Sundays.

Brussels: Opening of “Defending Life With Life”, a stunning exhibition of photographs from Honduras, Kenya, India, Western Sahara, and Serbia

On 15 December 2009 the Front Line photo exhibition “Defending Life with Life” was officially opened in Brussels, in the Halles St-Géry. This exhibition of photographs by Mark Condren is a powerful testimony to the courage and commitment of human rights defenders who every day put their lives on the line in defence of the rights of others. 'Defending Life With Life' consists of a series of stunning photographic portraits which document the experience of human rights defenders in Honduras, Western Sahara, North East India, Serbia and Kenya. The exhibition will run until 27 January 2010 inclusive.

Western Sahara: Press Rrelease - Arrest and Expulsion of Ms Aminatou Haidar from Western Sahara to Spain latest attack on Sahrawi human rights defenders

Front Line is extremely concerned to learn today that human rights defender Ms Aminatou Haidar has been expelled from Western Sahara and deported to the Canary Islands following her arbitrary arrest on 13 November 2009 at Laayoune airport. Moroccan authorities held her for nearly 22 hours before sending her to Spain.

Dublin: Irish launch of the international campaign “Colombia: Human Rights Defenders Under Threat”

At an event in Dublin today a coalition of Irish and international NGOs joined forces to launch a campaign for the protection of human rights defenders under threat in Colombia. The members of the coalition, ABColombia, Front Line, Trócaire and Christian Aid highlighted the fact that while the recent establishment of a formal dialogue on human rights with Colombia is a positive initiative more should be done since human rights defenders in Colombia still face a critical situation. Read More

Dublin: New report documents harassment and intimidation of human rights defenders in Syria

This report is a summary of a study conducted by Mazen Darwish from the Syrian Centre for Media & Freedom of Expression which analyses the impact of current Syrian Government polices on the human rights climate. The study lists the names of more than 400 activists from different parts of Syria who are subject to travel bans, among them 101 human rights defenders, 75 of whom have been identified as members of 12 different human rights groups, including 20 women.

Dublin: Martin Sheen Presents Front Line Award 2009 to Dr Yuri Melini of Guatemala

Dr Yuri Melini was awarded the Front Line Award because of his work to uphold the rights indigenous people of Guatemala against the ruthless interests of the logging and mining companies who put the profits of their companies before the interests of the community. On 4 September Yuri Melini was shot 7 times as he was leaving his home and as a result spent 22 days in intensive care. He was shot because his human rights work challenged the interests of powerful people.

Today in Dublin Front Line was joined by parliamentarians from the main political parties, and both the Irish and European parliaments, to show their support for the courage and struggle for human rights of four outstanding human rights defenders. Danilo Rueda from Colombia, Yaena Solaemae from Thailand, Dr Yuri Melini from Guatemala and Samuel Mohochi from Kenya have been selected by the Front Line jury as the shortlisted nominees for the Front Line Award 2009.
