Uganda: UPDATE - Human rights defender Mr Samwel Mohochi initiates legal proceedings against the Government of Ugandaposted on: 2011/07/06

Further to a Front Line urgent appeal dated 14 April 2011, Front Line has been informed of the following new information regarding the situation of human rights defender and lawyer, Mr. Samwel Mohochi:

It is reported that Mr Mohochi, a lawyer and trustee of the Kenya National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders, has begun legal proceedings against the Government of Uganda at the East African Court of Justice following his deportation from Entebbe International Airport on 13 April 2011.

Further Information

Mr Mohochi is reportedly suing the Government of Uganda under Articles 6 (d) and 7 (2) of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, for failing to allow him access to due process of the law or any legal or administrative process before being deported.

Mr Mohochi is allegedly seeking a declaration from the Court stating that the decision to deny him entry to Uganda was illegal on the grounds that he is a citizen of a Kenya, a member state of the East African Community.

Uganda: UPDATE- Anti Homosexuality Bill not passedposted on: 2011/05/13

The Anti - Homosexuality bill has not been passed in Uganda. The parliamentary business of the current government ended today and the bill was not discussed. As the parliament has now been officially dissolved the bill will not be passed unless re-introduced in the new parliament.

Uganda: UPDATE - Human rights defender Mr Al Amin Kimathi to go on trial for Ugandan World Cup bombingposted on: 2010/12/03

On 30 November 2010, the prosecution in the case of human rights defender Mr Al Amin Kirmathi who is accused of involvement in the World Cup suicide bombings in Kampala, sent the case to the Ugandan High Court for trial.

Further Information

Al Amin Kirmathi is due to go on trial with 17 others also accused of being involved in the bombing, while a further 17 were released and charges against them were dropped.

Al-Amin Kimathi is Executive Coordinator of Muslims Human Rights Forum (MHRF), and has been at the forefront in exposing and documenting human rights violations, arbitrary detention and unlawful renditions in the context of counter-terrorism operations in the East and Horn of Africa.

Al-Amin Kimathi was arrested in Kampala on 15 September 2010.

Uganda- Human rights defenders Messrs Gerald Kankya, TLC coordinator, Simon Amanyire and Gilbert Rwaheru have police bond extended until 5 Decemberposted on: 2010/11/05

On 5 November 2010 human rights defenders Messrs Gerald Kankya, TLC coordinator, Simon Amanyire and Gilbert Rwaheru reported to their local police station where they had their police bond extended until 5 December.

Uganda: Update- Court hearing of human rights defender Dan Rubombora adjournedposted on: 2010/10/22

Human rights defender Mr Dan Rubombora was due to appear before the High Court in Uganda on 19 October, but has had his hearing adjourned until 03 November 2010. The hearing was rescheduled after the magistrate failed to attend.

Uganda: Update - Human rights defender Al-Amin Kimathi charged with various counts of terrorism and murderposted on: 2010/09/21

On 20 September 2010, human rights defender Mr Al-Amin Kimathi was charged with various counts of murder, attempted murder and terrorism in connection to the terrorist bombings in Kampala on 11 July 2010.

Uganda – Update: Human rights lawyer Mbugua Mureithi released, human rights defender Al-Amin Kimathi remains in custodyposted on: 2010/09/20

The Ugandan police have released Kenyan lawyer Mbugua Muriethi on Saturday 18 September. He was declared persona non grata and escorted to the airport. Once in Nairobi, he addressed a press conference where he accused the Ugandan authorities of harassment. He reported that they were held and driven around Uganda as the security personnel interrogated them. During his detention, he was not allowed access to a lawyer.

Geneva: United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders urges Uganda to shelve anti-homosexuality billposted on: 2010/03/02

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Ms. Margaret Sekaggya, and the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, Mr. Frank LaRue, urge the Ugandan Government to drop, entirely, the the "anti-homosexuality" bill now pending before the Ugandan parliament.
