Sudan: UPDATE - Human rights defender Bushra Gamar Hussein Rahma transferred from Kober prison to a detention centreposted on: 2012/01/31

Front Line Defenders has received information that Sudanese human rights defender Bushra Gamar Hussein Rahma was transferred on 22 January 2012 from the security section of Kober Prison in Khartoum North to a detention centre operated by the Department of the Attorney General.

Mr Bushra Gamar Hussein Rahma has resumed his hunger strike due to the failure of the Sudanese authorities to fulfil their agreement to release him or bring him to trial by 10 October 2011.

Mr Bushra Gamar Hussein Rahma agreed to lift his hunger strike on 29 September 2011 in exchange for the pledge given by the authorities that he would be released or brought to trial by 10 October. Mr Rahma, who had been held in incommunicado detention since his arrest on 25 June 2011, was visited by his family on 7 October 2011 at the National Security Intelligence Service Section in Kober Prison in Khartoum North.

Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, T.D. re Arrest of Sudanese human rights defender, Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam posted on: 2010/12/23

I am concerned to learn of the arrest yesterday of the Sudanese human rights defender, Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, Chairperson of the Sudan Social Development Organisation and recipient in 2005 of the inaugural Front Line award for Human Rights Defenders.

"I call on the Sudanese authorities to immediately release Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, whose detention appears to be in relation to charges on which he was previously acquitted. While Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam is in detention I call on the Sudanese authorities to ensure that he is treated in accordance with international minimum standards on the treatment of prisoners. I also urge the Sudanese authorities to take all necessary steps to ensure that human rights defenders in Sudan, carrying out their legitimate work in the defence of human rights, are able to operate free from restriction".

Sudan: Update - Sudan Social Development Organisation (SUDO) allowed to continue its workposted on: 2010/07/29

Front line welcomes the decision by the Khartoum Court of Appeal ordering against the dissolution of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO). On 21 April 2010 Judge Khalid Abdul-Qader Saleh ruled that the General Commissioner of the Humanitarian Assistance Commission had no legal authority to dissolve societies, and hence the order to dissolve SUDO was overturned.

Sudan: Statement by SUDO on the dissolving of the Sudan Social Development Organisationposted on: 2009/03/06

On Thursday 5th March 2009 around 17:30 Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO) received a letter signed by the General Commissioner of the Humanitarian Assistance Commission (HAC), that the Commission had decided to dissolve the organisation with immediate effect and handover all its 10 offices and all its properties and resources to a committee from HAC.

Case Update

Front Line welcomes the release of Osman Hummaida from detention in the office of the National Security Service (NSS) in Northern Khartoum on 28 November 2008 at around 12.30 am. Abdelmonim Aljak and Amir Mohamed Suliman, who were arrested with Osman Hummaida and redetained several times, have not been rearrested. Despite the release of the human rights defenders from detention, Front Line condemns the torture and ill-treatment that Osman Hummaida and Abdelmonim Aljak were subjected to in the course of interrogation.

Hisham Abbas of the Kajbar Dam Committee was released from detention on 20 September 2007. No members of the Kajbar Dam Committee currently remain in detention.

All Khajbar Dam campaigners released

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defenders Al Khatib Mohamed Salim, Maisara Izzeldin Mohamed Munowar, Faroug Nuri, Daoud Suliman, Isam Mohamed Fagir and Nazmi Mohamed Hamid on 13 September and Nazmi Mohamed Hamid’s brother Nayif Mohamed Hamid, on 12 September. All had been arrested between 27 and 29 August 2007 and are campaigners against the construction of the Kajbar Dam, in the Nubian area of northern Sudan. They were being detained in Dongola prison. Hisham Abbas, a member of the Kajbar Dam Committee, is the remaining campaigner who continues to be in detention in Dongola prison.

Sudan: ongoing detention of human rights defender Dr Mohammed Julal Hashimposted on: 2007/08/23

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defenders Osman Ibrahim, Alam Aldeen Abd Alghni, Emad Merghni Seed Ahmed, Abd Allah Abd Alghume, Mugahid Mohamed Abdalla and Osman Shammat on 19 August 2007. However, Front Line remains deeply concerned at the ongoing detention of human rights defender and University lecturer Dr Mohammed Julal Hashim. Dr Mohammed Julal Hashim was arrested on 15 June 2007. He received his last visit from his family two weeks ago when he was being detained in Debek Prison, north Khartoum, but it is believed that he may have been transferred to the national security wing of Kober Prison in Khartoum North. Reports state that he suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure. Front Line is concerned that he may be at risk of torture and ill-treatment.

Sudan: Abdel Aziz Mohamed Ali Khieri released from Dabak prison, North of Khartoum.posted on: 2007/08/07

Following international pressure human rights defender Abdel Aziz Mohamed Ali Khieri was released from Dabak prison, North of Khartoum, on 5 August 2007 at 5 pm (local time) . He was arrested on 13 June 2007 following the protests on 13th. June 2007 against government plans to build the Kajbar Dam in Sudan's Northern State.

Sudan - Arrest and Detention of Human Rights Defender Madawi Ibrahim Adam, January 2004posted on: 2004/06/17

On 28 December 2003, Madawi Ibrahim Adam, chair of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO), was arrested at his home in Omdurman by the National Security Agency. His house was damaged and searched, and some documents were seized, including a project for the development of water stations in southern Sudan.

His office at Lamda Engineering Company in Khartoum was also searched, and his computer was confiscated. He was put in prison without being charged or given any reason for his arrest. On 31 December 2003, he was allowed to call his wife to tell her that he was well and to ask for some clothes. On 7 January 2003, his wife was allowed to see him. However, he is still being held in Kober prison.

Front Line has raised the case directly with the Sudanese authorities and called for his release. Front Line expressed concern that the arrest of Mr. Madawi Ibrahim Adam is linked to the activities of SUDO on behalf of sustainable development and human rights. Madawi Ibrahim Adam had carried out a workshop on human rights education in Shendi on 27 December 2003, one day before his arrest.

Sudanese Human Rights Defender Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam Risks Death Penalty, March 2004posted on: 2004/06/17

Sudanese Human Rights Defender, Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, arrested on 28th December 2003 has now been charged under five different articles of the Criminal Act 1991. Two of the charges, "undermining the constitutional system" and "waging war against the state" can reportedly result in the death penalty. Front Line has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam who is being persecuted because of his human rights work with the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO).

Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, the Chairperson of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO), a voluntary organization created to promote sustainable development and human rights, was arrested at his home on the 28th of December 2003, and has been in detention ever since. On 7 and 8 February 2004, he reportedly entered into hunger strike for two days, requesting an immediate and unconditioned release or a fair and prompt trial.
