All Khajbar Dam campaigners released

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defenders Al Khatib Mohamed Salim, Maisara Izzeldin Mohamed Munowar, Faroug Nuri, Daoud Suliman, Isam Mohamed Fagir and Nazmi Mohamed Hamid on 13 September and Nazmi Mohamed Hamid’s brother Nayif Mohamed Hamid, on 12 September. All had been arrested between 27 and 29 August 2007 and are campaigners against the construction of the Kajbar Dam, in the Nubian area of northern Sudan. They were being detained in Dongola prison. Hisham Abbas, a member of the Kajbar Dam Committee, is the remaining campaigner who continues to be in detention in Dongola prison.  Read More

Sudan: ongoing detention of human rights defender Dr Mohammed Julal Hashim

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defenders Osman Ibrahim, Alam Aldeen Abd Alghni, Emad Merghni Seed Ahmed, Abd Allah Abd Alghume, Mugahid Mohamed Abdalla and Osman Shammat on 19 August 2007. However, Front Line remains deeply concerned at the ongoing detention of human rights defender and University lecturer Dr Mohammed Julal Hashim. Dr Mohammed Julal Hashim was arrested on 15 June 2007. He received his last visit from his family two weeks ago when he was being detained in Debek Prison, north Khartoum, but it is believed that he may have been transferred to the national security wing of Kober Prison in Khartoum North. Reports state that he suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure. Front Line is concerned that he may be at risk of torture and ill-treatment.  Read More

Sudan: Abdel Aziz Mohamed Ali Khieri released from Dabak prison, North of Khartoum.

Following international pressure human rights defender Abdel Aziz Mohamed Ali Khieri was released from Dabak prison, North of Khartoum, on 5 August 2007 at 5 pm (local time) . He was arrested on 13 June 2007 following the protests on 13th. June 2007 against government plans to build the Kajbar Dam in Sudan's Northern State.  Read More

Sudanese human right defender visits the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs

The Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights, Mr Conor Lenihan T.D., met with Ms Maha Alsherief of Sudan Social Development Organisation (SUDO) on 1 February 2006, to discuss the plight of women in refugee camps in Darfur, Sudan.

Ms Alsherief works as a protection officer for SUDO in the refugee camps in Darfur. She works specifically with victims of rape, sexual assault and abduction.

According to the UN, some 3.4 million people continue to be affected by the conflict in Darfur, of whom 1.8 million are internally displaced and approximately 300,000 have fled to neighbouring Chad. This level of internal displacement has exacerbated rates of gender based violence, including rape, sexual assault and abduction.

Speaking after the meeting, the Minister said: "All too frequently we see the brutal rape of women and children used as a weapon of war. Sexual violence is now an integral and devastating part of the ongoing conflict in Darfur."

He added that meeting Ms Alsherief gave his department "invaluable information that can only enhance our understanding of the scale and harrowing affects of this type of violence."  Read More

Dr Mudawi Ibrahim Adam released

The Chairperson of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO) was released from detention in Khartoum on Monday 16 May 2005. Dr Mudawi had been arrested on Sunday 8 May 2005 just hours before he was due to board a flight en route to Ireland where he was to be presented with the inaugural Front Line Award for human rights defenders by the President of Ireland Mary McAleese.

"I do thank all of those people who supported me," said Dr Mudawi, "the pressure is part of the reason for my release." Front Line is calling on the Sudanese authorities to drop all charges against him and to ensure that human rights defenders are free to engage in their peaceful and legitimate activities.  Read More

Sudan: Wife and Young Daughter of Arrested Sudanese HRD Receive Award from President Mary McAleese on his Behalf

The wife and young daughter of arrested Sudanese human rights defender, Dr Mudawi Ibrahim Adam received the inaugural Front Line Award from President McAleese in Dublin today.

Dr Mudawi was arrested on Sunday afternoon just hours before he was due to board a flight en route to Ireland. He was selected for the award because of his courageous and inspiring work for human rights in Sudan, including Darfur, which led to him being twice imprisoned in the last year.

Reports from Sudan say that his passport has been confiscated and that he has been charged under Articles 53 and 57 of the 1991 Criminal Act for “espionage against the country” and “photographing military areas”. Article 53 carries a potential death penalty or life in prison.  Read More

Human Rights Defender Arrested Just Hours Before he was Due to Board a Plane for Ireland to Receive Front Line Award

Dr Mudawi Ibrahim Adam is due to receive the inaugural Front Line Award from President McAleese at a ceremony in Dublin's City Hall on Friday morning (13 May 2005). He was selected for the award because of his courageous and inspiring work for human rights in Sudan, including in Darfur, which led to him being twice imprisoned in the last year. At 11.00 am on Sunday 8th of May he was arrested in the street in Khartoum North, hours before he was due to board a flight en route to Ireland.

"The actions of the Sudanese authorities betray their contempt for the protection of human rights," said Front Line Director Mary Lawlor, "this new arrest of Dr Mudawi is a further attempt to silence those who work for the rights of others in Sudan. They will not succeed."

Sudan: Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam Released But Still Charged; Concerns For The Safety of Other Human Rights Defenders

Front Line is deeply concerned for the safety of three Sudanese human rights defenders and members of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO), Dr Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman and Adeeb Abd Rahman. Dr. Mudawi has been released but all charges have not been dropped against him, while Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman and Adeeb Abd Rahman are still missing.

On 24th January 2005, Dr Mudawi, Chairperson of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO) and Salah Mohammed Abdelrahman, member of SUDO were arrested in a small village called Kondoua (North Kordfan) and were held for interrogation by the national security forces.  Read More

Sudanese Human Rights Defenders Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam and Salah Mohammed Abu Alrahman Arrested

Front Line is concerned for the safety of Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, human rights defender and Director of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO), and Salah Mohammed Abu Alrahman, a volunteer with SUDO. Both are being held incommunicado at the National Security Centre in Khartoum.

According to the information received, Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam and Mr. Salah Mohammed Abu Alrahman were arrested in a small village called Kondoua (North Kordufan) on 24 January 2005. The men have allegedly been arrested for interrogation by the national security forces; they were reportedly being held at the security headquarter in Umrouaba city but have been transferred to Al Obeid, the capital of North Kurdofan State. At present, neither the family of Salah Mohammed Abu Alrahman nor that of Dr. Mudawi have been informed as to the purpose of the arrest.  Read More

Sudan - Arrest and Detention of Human Rights Defender Madawi Ibrahim Adam, January 2004

On 28 December 2003, Madawi Ibrahim Adam, chair of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO), was arrested at his home in Omdurman by the National Security Agency. His house was damaged and searched, and some documents were seized, including a project for the development of water stations in southern Sudan.

His office at Lamda Engineering Company in Khartoum was also searched, and his computer was confiscated. He was put in prison without being charged or given any reason for his arrest. On 31 December 2003, he was allowed to call his wife to tell her that he was well and to ask for some clothes. On 7 January 2003, his wife was allowed to see him. However, he is still being held in Kober prison.

Front Line has raised the case directly with the Sudanese authorities and called for his release. Front Line expressed concern that the arrest of Mr. Madawi Ibrahim Adam is linked to the activities of SUDO on behalf of sustainable development and human rights. Madawi Ibrahim Adam had carried out a workshop on human rights education in Shendi on 27 December 2003, one day before his arrest.

Sudanese Human Rights Defender Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam Risks Death Penalty, March 2004

Sudanese Human Rights Defender, Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, arrested on 28th December 2003 has now been charged under five different articles of the Criminal Act 1991. Two of the charges, "undermining the constitutional system" and "waging war against the state" can reportedly result in the death penalty. Front Line has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam who is being persecuted because of his human rights work with the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO).

Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, the Chairperson of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO), a voluntary organization created to promote sustainable development and human rights, was arrested at his home on the 28th of December 2003, and has been in detention ever since. On 7 and 8 February 2004, he reportedly entered into hunger strike for two days, requesting an immediate and unconditioned release or a fair and prompt trial.  Read More
