On 26 May 2011, the Head of Front Line's EU Office, Mr Vincent Forest, was invited to open an exchange of views on the situation of human rights in the Arab Peninsula at the meeting of the European Parliament sub-committee on human rights. He raised the specific case of former Front Line Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Mr Abdulhadi Alkhawaja, and responding to representatives of the Bahraini authorities, he stressed that investigations into the acts of torture faced by Abdulhadi Alkhawaja and other defendants have been denied by the Military Court Judges.

Front Line expresses its concern regarding the ongoing arbitrary detention of Mr Ali Ahmad Al-Saqqaf, a teacher and member of the Yemeni Organization for the Defence of Democratic Rights and Freedoms (YODDRF) which campaigns for the protection of the rights of detainees.

Yemen: UPDATE Trial of human right defender Mr Salah Yahya el-Saqladi adjourned for final ruling posted on: 2010/03/30

Front Line has received the following update in relation to journalist and human rights defender, Mr Salah Yahya el-Saqladi in Yemen. On 22 March 2010, Salah Yahya el-Saqladi and two other journalists, Mr Fu’ad Rashed and Mr Ahmed Al-Rabezi, were brought before the Special Penal Court (which acts as the State Security Court) charged with “disturbing public order" and "inciting hatred through their writings on Internet websites”.

Yemen – UPDATE – Trial of human right defender Mr Salah Yahya el-Saqladi adjournedposted on: 2009/12/10

On 7 December 2009, Journalist and human rights defender, Mr Salah Yahya el-Saqladi, and two other journalists, Mr Fu’ad Rashed and Mr Ahmed Al-Rabezi, were brought before the Special Penal Court (acting as the State Security Court) where they pleaded not guilty to the charges that they “disturbed public order and incited hatred through what they wrote on internet websites”. The defence team asked the court to transfer the case to the specialised court as this court is not specialised in media matters. A security force prevented journalists and human rights defenders from holding a protest sit-in near the court building. The court adjourned the case until 20 December 2009.

Yemen – UPDATE – Human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer charged with forming an armed groupposted on: 2009/11/10

On 1 November 2009, detained human rights defender Mr Yasre Al-Wazeer was brought before a penal court in Yemen which serves as a State Security Court, and in a closed hearing was charged with forming an armed group. No lawyer was present, as Yasre Al-Wazeer was not informed about the hearing beforehand. He has reportedly never been interrogated in relation to charges of forming an armed group.

Yemen:UPDATE - Human rights defender Mu een Al-Mutawakel released while Yasre Al-Wazeer remains in detentionposted on: 2009/07/02

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defender Mr Mu’een Ibraheem Al-Mutawakel on 30 June 2009 from the Political Security Prison in San'a where he had been held since his arrest on 27 May 2008. Mu’een Ibraheem Al-Mutawakel is a member of the Organization for Change and the Defence of Rights and Freedoms (OCDRF), an organisation that works for judicial and prison reform.

Front Line welcomes the release of both Mr Anees Mansoor and Mr Wajdy El-Shuaiby. Anees Mansoor is a member of the Lahaj branch of the National Organisation for Defending Rights and Freedoms “HOOD”, and a journalist for Al-ayam newspaper. Wajdy El-Shuaiby covers human rights issues as a journalist for Alwatni newspaper.

Fear of ill treatment and torture of Yemeni human rights defenderposted on: 2006/10/18

‘Ali al-Dailami, Executive Director of the Yemeni Organization for the Defense of Democratic Rights and Freedom is reportedly being held incommunicado and may be at risk of torture and ill treatment since his arrest and detention on 9 October 2006.

‘Ali al-Dailami was due to take part in a human rights partnership meeting in Copenhagan when he was arrested at the capital’s airport He has previously campaigned on behalf of his brother, cleric Yahia al-Dailami, who was sentenced to death in May 2005. Yahia al-Daliami's death sentence was commuted and he was eventually released.

Front Line is deeply concerned for the health and safety of 'Ali al-Dailami and urges the Yemen authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Ali al-Dailami, reveal his whereabouts and take all measures to guarantee that  the treatment of 'Ali al-Dailami, while in custody, adheres to conditions set out in the ‘Basic Principles for Treatment of Prisoners, adopted by General Assembly resolution 45/11.
