Tunisia: Record on human rights defenders remains “very poor”, reveals a Front Line and Human Rights First mission report

While Tunisia is commemorating this year the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the republican system and the 20th anniversary of the accession of President Ben Ali to power, its record with respect to the treatment of human rights activists remains “very poor”, reveals a mission report, released on 27 September in Brussels by Front Line, the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, on the occasion of the visit of Ms Sihem Bensedrine, Tunisian human rights defender and journalist, who is an emblematic figure of the fight for freedom and human rights in Tunisia. Front Line joins joint appeal to Kofi Annan on attacks on human rights defenders in Tunisia

Front Line, along with numerous other civil society organisations, has signed an open letter to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan asking him to launch a full investigation into the attacks on human rights and freedom of expression that occured in Tunisia during the World Summit on the Information Society.

Newly released security project for human rights defenders to be presented in Tunis

Front Line will present NGO-in-a-Box (Security edition) on Tuesday 15 November at the UN World Summit on Information Technology (WSIS) in Tunis.

Ngo-in-a-Box is a collation of security related tools and resources for use by civil society and human rights groups and independent media. It is a peer reviewed set of free and open source software with step-by-step installation and learning manuals, distributed as a box set of CD ROMs. NGO-in-a-box (security edition) is available in five languages – English, Spanish, Russian, French and Arabic. It is available free of charge for the non-profit sector. The focus of the complied software is on digital privacy and Internet security.

Security and privacy of information is a major concern to civil society groups especially human rights monitors, independent media and anti corruption organisations that can become targets of surveillance, data theft, equipment damage and confiscation. Ngo-in-a-Box provides the non IT-expert with the tools to protect him or herself in the digital world.

Tunisia: Alongside a world summit, the police ban a gathering of international and Tunisian associations

November 14 2005 The Tunisian authorities prevented Tunisian and foreign associations to hold a meeting in order to prepare an event within the World Summit on the Information Society on the morning of 14th November. This was a preparatory meeting for the “Citizen’s Summit on the Information Society” to debate the topics mentioned within the agenda of the WSIS, which is sponsored by the United Nations.  Read More
