The Rwandan government has reacted strongly to a US State Department Report critical of the central African state’s human rights record. Released on 8 March 2006, the report details alleged human rights abuses committed by Rwandan authorities and the difficult conditions in which human rights defenders work. Foreign Minister Muligande reportedly challenged the authors of the state department to produce evidence to back up their claims. Front Line published a report in 2005 on the repression of human rights defenders in Rwanda which is quoted in the UN State Department report.
