DRC: Ten people sentenced for the murder of Didace Namujimbo

On 4 May, the Military Tribunal in Bukavo rendered its judgement on the trial for the murder of human rights defender and journalist Didace Namujimbo of Radio Okapi. He was killed on 21 November 2008 in Bukavu, South Kivu. Three of the fifteen men accused have been sentenced to capital punishment, seven of them to prison terms ranging from seven months to five years, and five have been acquitted.

The tribunal also condemned the accused, together with the State, to offer compensation to Didace Namujimbo's widow and to his father. In addition to murder, the accused were also sentenced on charges of theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, jailbreak, and illegal possession of firearms.

The trial, however, failed to answer the many questions surrounding Didace Namujimbo's murder, including the real motives behind the crime.
