Saudi Arabia - Arrest of human rights defender Mr Thamer Abdulkareem Al-Khather and harassment of his father, Dr Abdulkareem Youssef Al-Khather

Human rights defender Mr Thamer Abdulkareem Al-Khather was arrested on 3 March 2010. Thamer Abdulkareem Al-Khather is an advocate of prisoners' rights and a member of a youth movement that calls for constitutional reform.

He is also the eldest son of Dr Abdulkareem Youssef Al-Khather, Professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at the Faculty of Islamic Jurisprudence at Qassim University and member of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA). Both human rights defenders reportedly had constantly been harassed by detectives from the Department of General Investigation (DGI) during the week prior to the arrest.

On 3 March 2010, at approximately 11pm, Thamer Abdulkareem Al-Khather was arrested at his home in Qassim by DGI officials. He is currently being held in detention. No reason has been given for the arrest.

The following day, 4 March 2010, DGI officials conducted a search at the home of Thamer Abdulkareem Al-Khather and confiscated his personal computer. No official search warrant was shown.

Front Line believes that the arrest of Thamer Abdulkareem Al-Khather and the harassment of he and his father Dr Abdulkareem Youssef Al-Khather are directly related to their human rights activities.
