Western Sahara - UPDATE - human rights defender Sukeina Idrissi released after police interrogation

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defender, Ms Sukeina Idrissi, on 1st October 2009, reportedly after police interrogation. Sukeina was kidnapped from her car on the morning of 1st October 2009 after attending a trial of three Sahrawi detainees.

Witnesses stated that her abductors were police agents who said that they were on direct orders from the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior. Police and the State Lawyer later denied that she had been taken into custody.

According to local organisations ASVDH and CODESA, Sukeina Idrissi was released after being interrogated by the police. No explanation has been given as to the nature or subject of her detention or the orders from the Ministry. Sukeina Idrissi is a member of the Sahrawi Association of Victims of Grave Violations of Human Rights (ASVDH) and also president of the Forum Future for Sahrawi Women (FAFESA), and works on documenting human rights abuses in Morocco-administrated Western Sahara. CODESA has reported that she was previously interrogated for several hours when she was leaving for Algeria to attend the Second African Assembly on 2-4 July 2009.
