Cameroon: UPDATE - ACDIC members sentenced to suspended jail term and 26500 CFA fine each

Mr Bernard Njonga, Mr Isaac Difakoué and two other members of the Association Citoyenne de Défense des Intérêts Collectifs - ACDIC (The Citizens Association for the Defence of Collective Interests) have been sentenced on 28 May 2009 in Yaounde on charges of organising an illegal demonstration.

They have been condemned to a suspended two-year prison term and were fined 26,500 CFA each.
The four human rights defenders were amongst the nine protesters arrested during a peaceful demonstration organised by ACDIC on 10 December 2008 in Yaounde. At that time, two more ACDIC members, Mr Nono Theophile and Mr Mowha Franklin, were severely beaten by the police during their arrest.
Bernard Njonga is the National President of the ACDIC and Isaac Difakoué is the Vice-President of the same organisation. The ACDIC is a citizen´s movement which defends the rights of citizens in Cameroon.
