Bahrain: Prominent Human Rights Defender Nabeel Rajab Imprisoned for 3 Months for Tweet
On 9 July, prominent Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab was detained from his home and taken to prison to serve a 3-month sentence handed down earlier in the day. He was sentenced for sending a Tweet about the Bahraini Prime Minister.
Rajab is President of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights and Director of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights. He has campaigned around the world to bring attention to human rights abuses in Bahrain, including the case of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja.
Police and security forces surrounded Rajab's home when they came for him. He was sitting with his family, lawyer and friends, and explained that in addition to this case, there were still outstanding cases pending against him. He expected to learn of the outcomes of those other trials while in prison.
