On 30 April 2012 the last ordinary session of the Sixteenth Legislature of the Congress saw the unanimous passing of the draft law establishing a national mechanism for the protection of human rights defenders and journalists.

The bill passed with 344 votes in favour, no votes against and no abstentions. Front Line Defenders congratulates the Mexican Senate and the Lower Chamber of Congress on this historical step and welcome its fundamental contribution to the establishment of the Mechanism as an instrument that guarantees effective protection for human rights defenders and journalists, if implemented in an effective way.
