Human rights defender from Bosnia and Herzegovina killed

Dusko Kondor, the founder and director of the human rights education section of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina was shot dead on 22 February 2007 at the door of his apartment; his daughter was also injured in the attack.
Dusko Kondor has been the subject of repeated death threats in the past eighteen months and he reported these threats to the relevant authorities. On the day of his murder, Dusko Kondor had reportedly gone to the police station in Bijeljina to request that protective measures be taken but the requests were not granted.
Front Line believes that Dusko Kondor was killed in relation to his legitimate activities in defence of human rights. Front Line calls on the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to carry out a full impartial and prompt investigation into the killing of Dusko Kondor with the results made public and those responsible brought to justice. Front Line also urges the authorities to guarantee that all human rights defenders in the Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina are free to carry out their legitimate activities in defending and protecting the rights of others.
