Letter:

Dear President Yudhoyono

I am concerned that human rights defenders who had meetings with Ms Hina Jilani, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on the situation of human rights defenders, during her official visit to Indonesia, have been harassed and intimidated.

I am particularly concerned about Yan Christian Warinussy, Executive Director of the Institute of Research, Analysis and Development for Legal Aid in Manokwari, West Papua, which documents human rights abuses, who has received repeated death threats because of his work. He was recently followed by an unmarked car. One of the occupants was identified as a detective with the Regional Police. The day before, Yan Christian had received information that the military were planning new actions in “tribute” to Indonesian Independence Day (17 August), targetting human rights defenders.

I urge you to take immediate action to ensure that Yan Christian Warinussy and other human rights defenders in West Papua can work in defence of human rights without fear.

Yours sincerely
