DRC: 2nd anniversary of assassination of human rights defender Pascal Kabungulu Kibembi,

Pascal Kabungulu Kibembi was assassinated at the age of 55, in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In the early hours of July 31 2005, armed men broke into his home and shot him dead in front of his family. One of the attackers apparently said: "We were looking for you, and today is the day of your death.” Pascal was also the vice president of the regional human rights umbrella group in the Great Lakes, the Ligue des Droits de l'Homme dans la Région des Grands Lacs.

Today (31 July 2007), there are two activities organised by Héritiers de la Justice in Bukavu and Kinshasa. In Bukavu a day of activities has been organised, including a photo exhibition. There will be a procession to the cemetery where a candle and flowers will be left at the graveside of Pascal Kabungulu, and in the afternoon the group will present a declaration to the national authorities – asking that an investigation be carried out into the deaths of Pascal Kabungulu and the journalist Serge Maheshe.

Human rights defender and journalist Serge Maheshe was assassinated on 13 June 2007 in Bukavu. Serge Maheshe was the editor of Radio Okapi in Bukavu, a radio station supported by the United Nations.

Héritiers de la Justice have made a formal request to the authorities that there be a monument erected in Bukavu in memory of Pascal Kabungulu.

In Kinshasa, a delegation of human rights defenders including members of Héritiers de la Justice will be presenting a memorandum to the President of the Republic, Joseph Kabila.
