A Syrian Supreme court sentenced seven human rights defenders to between five and seven years' imprisonment on 17 June 2007 for allegedly taking part in a pro-democracy discussion group and publishing articles on the internet which criticized the lack of democracy and freedom in Syria.

Nepal: Ongoing attacks and threats against two women human rights defendersposted on: 2007/06/20

Rita Mahato and Dev Kumari Mahara, staff members of the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) in Siraha district, Nepal received threats of rape and murder on 14 June 2007. These threats are the latest in a series of threats against the two human rights defenders.

Tunisia: National Council of Liberties shut down by policeposted on: 2007/06/18

Since the 18 May 2007 the building housing the offices of the National Council for Liberties in Tunisia (CNLT), has been surrounded by a large contingent of political police who are preventing the staff of the CNLT from getting into their offices. The CNLT has effectively been shut down following a joint Human Rights First and Front Line mission to Tunisia from 20-24 May 2007 to assess the human rights situation there.

Front Line welcomes the release of Uzbek human rights defender Gulbahor Turayev. On 12 June 2007, the Andijan Regional Court of Appeal ruled to reduce Gulbahor Turayeva's sentence of six years' imprisonment to a three-year suspended sentence.

Front Line mourns the death of Iraqi journalist Sahar Al-Haidariposted on: 2007/06/08

Front Line is greatly saddened to learn about the murder of the Iraqi journalist, Sahar Al-Haidari in her home town of Mosul on 7 June 2007. She was the mother of three children and worked as a news reporter for Iraq Voices, a news agency based in Mosul, the National Iraq News Agency - Nina and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting. Sahar Al-Haidari is the third journalist to be killed in Iraq in the last two weeks. Read more on Article 19 website

Human rights defenders arrested in Zimbabweposted on: 2007/06/06

Front Line is extremely concerned to hear that both Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu are to be transferred to Harare today, Friday 8 June 2007 and that both women have been threatened with torture by members of the police. The two women have not been charged and have not been fingerprinted. They have been refused access to their lawyers. The five other detained members of WOZA were released today, Friday 8 June 2007.

Seven women human rights defenders including Jenni Williams, Magodonga Mahlangu, Angeline Kururu and Rosemary Sizada of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) were arrested on 6 June 2007 and detained in Bulawayo Central Police Station.
