8 August 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the '8888 Uprising' in Burma when the military killed an estimated 3,000 people following the outbreak of peaceful protests calling for democracy on 8 August 1988. In September 2007 the junta, which has a monopoly on fuel prices, raised the price of fuel from approximately US$1.40 to US$2.80 a gallon, and raised the price of natural gas 5 fold, resulting in students, opposition activists and monks taking peacefully to the streets to protest against the government. During this Saffron Revolution, hundreds of human rights defenders and protesters were detained and sentenced to long periods in prison. Others have been forced into hiding and exile.  Read More

Tunisia: Release of human rights defender Slim Boukhdir

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defender and journalist Slim Boukhdir on 21 July 2008. Slim Boukhdir was arrested on 26 November 2007 and sentenced to one year's imprisonment on 18 January 2008. He was detained in Sfax prison, 230 kilometres south of Tunis. His release comes four months before the end of his sentence.  Read More

Iran: Arrest of Zeinab Bayzeydi, Women’s Rights Activist in Mahabad Kurdistan

Posted 18/07/2008 Zeinab Bayzeydi, women’s rights activist, member of the Human Rights Organization of Kurdistan and a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign in the city of Mahabad in Kurdistan Province, was arrested on 9 July 2008. On 5 July 2008, Zeinab Bayzeyd was reportedly summoned by telephone for questioning and interrogated for several hours. She was told to return for interrogation again on 9 July 2008, and after three hours of interrogation, she was arrested on the order of the courts and transferred to a detention center in Mahabad, managed by the Ministry of Information and Security.

Ethiopia: Government Prepares Assault on Civil Society

Human Rights Watch reported that Repressive New Legislation Should Be Amended or Scrapped in Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s government should immediately abandon plans to impose strict government controls and draconian criminal penalties on nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International said on July 1st. The two groups called on donor governments, whose behind-the-scenes efforts to see the bill reformed appear to have failed, to speak out publicly against the de facto criminalization of most of the human rights, rule of law and peace-building work currently being carried out in Ethiopia.  Read More

Tunisia: Arbitrary detention and interrogation of human rights defenders Sihem Bensedrine and Omar Mestiri

On 18 June 2008, Sihem Bensedrine and Omar Mestiri were stopped at the Tunisian-Algerian border while on their way to an event in Algeria to promote freedom of expression in the region. They were interrogated for approximately two and a half hours before being released. No reasons were given for their interrogation. Omar Mestiri is the chief editor of the online newspaper Kalima and Sihem Bensedrine is the founder and spokesperson of the Conseil national pour les libertés en Tunisie (CNLT) (National Council for Civil Liberties in Tunisia) and the Secretary-General for the Observatoire pour la Liberté de presse, d'édition et de création en Tunisie (OLPEC) (Observatory for the Freedom of the Press, Publication, and the Arts in Tunisia). On 7 February 2008, Sihem Bensedrine was awarded the 2008 Peace Prize by the Danish Peace Foundation.  Read More

Yemeni journalist and Human Rights defender Abdulkarin al-Khawaini has been awarded the prestigious Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Journalism Under Threat. The awards recognise excellence in human rights reporting and acknowledge journalism's significant contribution to the UK public's awareness and understanding of human rights issues.  Read More

Iran: Arrest of nine women's rights defenders during peaceful demonstration

Front Line is deeply concerned following the arrest of nine women's rights defenders during peaceful demonstration outside the Rahe Abrisham Gallery in Tehran, on 12 June 2008. The women's rights defenders, Aida Saadat, an online journalist for Etemad and Change for Equality; Nasrin Sotoode, a women's rights lawyer; Jelve Javaheri, an online journalist for the Change for Equality website; Jilla Baniyagoub, an online journalist with Sarmayeh and the Canon Zeman Irani; Sarah Loghmani and Farideh Ghaeb, both online journalists for Canon Zeman Irani; Alieh Motalbezadeh, a journalist and photographer; and women's rights defenders, Nahid Mirhaj and Nafiseh Azad, were meeting to celebrate the National Day of Solidarity of Iranian Women in objection to discriminatory laws against women in Iran and to review the achievements of the women's rights movement through similar meetings over previous years.  Read More

Uzbekistan: Mutabar Tadjibaeva released from prison

Uzbek human rights defender Mutabar Tadjibaeva was released from the Tashkent Women’s Prison where she had been frequently detained in solitary confinement in the psychiatric wing of the prison. Mutabar Tadjibaeva was arrested while on her way to attend the Front Line Dublin Platform for Human Rights Defenders and subsequently sentenced to eight years in prison.  Read More

Uzbekistan: Police raid on apartment of human rights defender Yelena Urlayeva

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that members of the police have raided the home of human rights defender Yelena Urlayeva on 29 May 2008. The police, acting on orders from a judge of Tashkent’s Mirzo-Ulugbek district, broke into her apartment, carried out a thorough inventory of her belongings and cut off her water supply and electricity due to a reported payment of $30 that was pending on her utility bill. During their search, which was carried out in a disrespectful manner, damaging much of her property, the police paid particular attention to documents that she had in her apartment.  Read More

Iran: Summons issued to human rights defender and women's rights activist Parvin Ardalan

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that a summons has been issued to Parvin Ardalan to present herself at the Revolutionary Court branch no. 13 on 2 August 2008 on charges of acting against national security through propaganda against the government. These charges relate to her work with websites Change for Equality and Zanestan. Parvin Ardalan is a women's rights defender and one of the founding members of the One Million Signatures Campaign.  Read More

India: Threats against Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi and members of the People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR)

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of death threats made via mobile phone against human rights defender Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi and members of the People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) between 25 April 2008 and 18 May 2008, calling for them to cease their human rights work, in particular their work with the Dalit communities in the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. Dr Raghuvanshi is the convener of the PVCHR and also a member of the District Vigilance Committee on Bonded Labour in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi's human rights work focuses on hunger and death due to starvation.  Read More
