Front Line welcomes the release of human rights defender Mr Mu’een Ibraheem Al-Mutawakel on 30 June 2009 from the Political Security Prison in San'a where he had been held since his arrest on 27 May 2008. Mu’een Ibraheem Al-Mutawakel is a member of the Organization for Change and the Defence of Rights and Freedoms (OCDRF), an organisation that works for judicial and prison reform. Read More

Egypt: UPDATE Human rights defender Mosaad Abu Fagr kept in detention despite new court order to release him

The Administrative Court of Egypt has suspended the decision of the Minister of the Interior to detain Mossaad Soliman Hassan , known as Mosaad Abu Fagr. On 16 June 2009, the court issued an explicit immediate release order, ruling that the ministry should bear all the expenses of the litigation and referred the case to the board of state commissioners. Western Sahara: Update: Human rights defender Yahya Mohamed el Hafed assaulted after 15 year sentence confirmed

On 24 June 2009, the Agadeer Appeal Court confirmed the 15 year sentence against human rights defender Mr. Yahya Mohamed el Hafed. According to the information received, the day after the court session, Yahya Mohamed el Hafed was subjected to physical assault by the guards at the Ayat-Melol prison, where his head was hit against the wall. Read More

Morocco: UPDATE human rights defender Chekib El-Khiari receives three-year prison sentence and 753,930 Dirham fine

According to the official news agency MAP, on 24 June 2009,the Casablanca criminal court of first instance sentenced Mr Chekib El-Khiari to three years in prison and ordered him to pay 753,930 Dirhams to Moroccan customs. The court said that Khayari deposited money in foreign banks without the authorization of Morocco's Exchange Office. Read More

On 25 June 2008, the Supreme Court of Russian Federation overturned the acquittal of the for men accused of involvement in the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. The decision to conduct a new trial highlights the difficulties faced by the Russian judicial system in investigating the murders and attacks on human rights defenders and journalists and the failure of the authorities to bring the intellectual and actual authors of such crimes to justice. Read More

Brussels: Launch of “Insiste Persiste Resiste Existe", a report on women human rights defenders' security strategies

On 24 June, in the EU Office of Front Line, Front Line and Kvinna till Kvinna (KtK) presented “Insiste Persiste Resiste Existe”, a compilation of security strategies addressing the specific needs of women human rights defenders (WHRDs), to 20 representatives of EU Institutions and Member States, and Brussels-based NGOs. Syria: Human rights defender Walid Al Bunni still in prison despite acquittal by court for lack of evidence

The Observatory (a joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) andthe World Organisation Against Torture) has learned of the acquittal of Mr Walid Al Bunni, a member of the Association of Human Rights in Syria and member of the National Council of the Damascus Declaration for Democratic National Change (NCDD). The Observatory remains deeply concerned by Mr. Al Bunni's ongoing arbitrary detention and the continued judicial harassment he faces in prison, which seems intended to punish him for his human rights activities. Read More

Bangkok: 200 civil society organisations demand "ASEAN human rights commission with teeth!: accountable, effective and independent"

Two hundred civil societies have demanded that ASEAN establish a regional human rights body at par with international human rights standards. In an open letter addressed to ASEAN’s High Level Panel and Secretary General today, civil societies urged that the Terms of Reference (TOR) of the ASEAN human rights body to include two vital elements for an effective human rights body - the mandates to carry out human rights protection and the provision for independent human rights experts to be appointed to run the body. Read More
