Niger; UPDATE - Sentencing of Marou Amadou to three months detention (suspended)

Human rights defender Mr Marou Amadou has been condemned by the Court of Appeal of Niamey to 3 months imprisonment, suspended sentence. The sentence has been appealed to the Supreme Court. Three charges against Marou Amadou, including participation to an un-registered association and crimes against the security of the State, remain pending. The trial, held on 11 January, was observed by representatives of the EU delegation, the French embassy and the Swiss Cooperation. Read More

Western Sahara: UPDATE - Temporary release of Ms Dagja Lachgar while six other human rights defenders declare hunger strike in detention

On 28 January 2010, Saharawi human rights defender Dagja Lachgar was temporarily released following three months and twenty days in detention in Sale military prison, Morocco. Human rights defender Ali Salem Tamek, Brahim Dahane, Ahmad Anasiri, Yahdih Ettarrouzi, Saleh Lebayhi, and Rachid Sghayar, who remain in detention in Sale prison, have declared that they will commence a 48-hour hunger strike on 4 February 2009, in protest against the ill-treatment that they are subjected to in detention. Read More

Turkey - Release of human rights lawyer Ms Filiz Kalayci

Front Line welcomes the release of human rights lawyer Ms Filiz Kalayci, executive board member of the Human Rights Association (IHD), on 28 January, after eight months in detention. Her release was ordered during the hearing held, on the same day, before the 11th Heavy Penal Court of Ankara. She is charged of 'aiding an illegal organisation' – the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The charges remain pending and the trial will resume on 10 June 2010. Read More

Vietnam: UPDATE – Human Rights Defender Ms Pham Thanh Nghien has been sentenced to four years in prison for spreading propaganda against the state

Human rights defender Ms Pham Thanh Nghien has been sentenced to four years in prison followed by three years under house arrest, having been found guilty of spreading propaganda against the state. The trial was closed to Western media and diplomats who have previously been allowed to watch such proceedings on closed-circuit at the courthouse, despite the fact that European Union diplomats had requested permission to attend and observe the trial. Pham Thanh Nghien has been held in prison since she was arrested on 18 September 2008 for attempting to stage a peaceful protest. Read More

Adolfo Guzmán Ordaz is a member of the organisation “Connect, Communication and Training” (Enlace, Comunicación y Capacitación – Enlace CC). Enlace CC is a civil organisation based in Chiapas which works for sustainable development for indigenous people and rural workers in central and southern Mexico, incorporating human rights and gender equality as its guiding principles. Read More

Palestine: UPDATE - Human rights defenders Mr Jamal Juma and Mr Mohammad Othman have been released from prison

Front Line welcomes the news that, on 13 January 2010, human rights defenders Mohammad Othman and Jamal Juma were finally released from detention. Jamal Juma was released without any specific restriction, whilst a fine of 10,000 NIS (Shekels) was imposed on Mohammed Othman and he will not be permitted to leave the country until the investigation into his case has closed. Read More

Mexico: Office of High Commission for Human Rights issues report on deteriorating security situation for human rights defenders

The Mexico office of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human rights visited Chihuahua to launch their report on the situation of HRDs in Mexico.
