See provisional agenda for 2001. Generally speaking, the Sub-Commission:
- initiates substantive human rights studies
- receives the reports of its Special Rapporteurs and Working Groups
- draws up new human rights standards.
- identifies violations of human rights throughout the world. There is some overlap with the work of the Commission, for which the Sub-Commission acts as a think-tank, but the Sub-Commission, in some capacities, has functioned as an autonomous body.
