Prominent Western Saharan human rights defender in Dublinposted on: 2007/01/03

Ali-Salem Tamek, a prominent human rights defender and founding member of the Western Sahara branch of the Forum for Truth and Justice, an organization that campaigns for the rights of victims and families of victims of torture, “disappearances” and other human rights violations, is in Dublin until 21 December, to highlight the human rights and political situation in Western Sahara.

Since his arrival he has met with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and is scheduled to meet public representatives, Simon Coveney, TD and MEP, Michael D. Higgins, Labour TD and Proinsias De Rossa, Labour MEP. He will also attend a session of the human rights committee of Joint Oireachats Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Ali-Salem Tamek has been instrumental in collecting and disseminating information about human rights violations committed by Moroccan forces. He has faced routine harassment and persecution in his attempt to monitor and denounce abuses by Moroccan authorities.

He has been jailed five times and has staged numerous hunger strikes whilst in prison (a total of 22). He has been subjected to torture and ill treatment while in prison.

Un defensor saharaui de los derechos humanos que iba a participar en la plataforma bi-anual que Front Line celebra en octubre a favor de los defensores de los derechos humanos se encuentra en huelga de hambre en una cárcel marroquí.

Ali Salem Tamek, de 31 años, es miembro fundador de la organización saharaui por los derechos humanos “Foro por la Verdad y la Justicia” y está detenido sin cargos en la cárcel de Ait Meloul, Marruecos.

Tamek fue detenido el pasado 18 de julio en el aeropuerto de D’el Ayoun cuando volvía de un viaje a Europa donde había estado apoyando la independencia del Sahara Occidental. Según la agencia de prensa de la República Árabe Saharaui (Sahara Presse Service), Tamek lleva tres semanas en huelga de hambre junto con otros cuatro defensores saharauis de los derechos humanos encarcelados (Mohamed Elmoutaoikil, El Hussein Lidri, Brahim Noumria y Laarbi Massoud).

Desde Front Line hacemos constar nuestra preocupación por el estado de salud de Ali Salem Talek [sic] y pedimos a las autoridades marroquíes su puesta en libertad de forma inmediata e incondicional.
